Giant linesman Mike Cvik to work his last game tonight
here at the Dome. Give him a good cheer if you're there, always seemed like a decent guy.

already mentioned in the GDT. It would be nice to see the crowd give this guy a good send off though.

I used to watch Mike Cvik do the lines at Moncton Hawk AHL games back in the 80's as a small child. Amazing he's been around this long, especially given his size.

Tough guy. I saw him getting a puck in the mouth. All bloodied, towel and all, yet laughing it off with the guys on the bench.

I don't know how it is possible to have a favorite linesman, but Mike Cvik is by far my favorite linesman in the game. Sad to see him go.

They had him on the fan yesterday, seems like a really nice, thoughtful guy. His story of climbing through the ranks in the minors was interesting.

I've met Mike a couple of times, a very nice and genuine guy who was always generous with his time and willingness to chat.
Hope the Flames honor him in some way tonight.

Kerr had a great one hour interview with Cvik last night:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/the-big-...with-rob-kerr/
He said he couldn't be a ref because he was too black and white and would call too many penalties. This is an unsurprising admission that the NHL wants refs to manage games.
He wanted to do a Flames-Oilers game in EDM as his last game, but his former boss Burke convinced him to do it in Calgary. I expect a nice send-off from the Flames.

I initially remembered him for his size, because he was awfully hard to miss. Later I noted just how professional he was. He's one of those linesmen who probably gets a massive amount of respect from players for how he conducts himself during the game time after time. He will be missed.

What's the background on his retirement. I heard part of the Kerr interview and it sounded like this wasn't his choice. In fact they wouldn't even let him finish out the year.

Has his "play" dropped off?
I am sure the NHL tracks their officials' performance.

No offense to Mike Cvik, but Jay Sharrers in the best linesman in hockey if for nothing other than his facial expressions.

I enjoy watching him officiate. My favourite part is how he's 7 feet tall on skates and every time he break up a scrum, the players immediately respect him and break off. No one wants to mess with the guy. Me and my buddies constantly note the ''monster ref'' whenever he's on the ice.
