Ducks trade Sekac to Blackhawks for Garbutt
Chicago Blackhawks @NHLBlackhawks
#Blackhawks acquire forward Jiri Sekac from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.
Quote:
The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that they have acquired forward Jiri Sekac (SEH-katch) from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Garbutt.
Sekac, 23, has posted three points (1G, 2A) in 22 games with Anaheim this season, his second in the National Hockey League. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native also appeared in the 2015 NHL All-Star Skills Competition. He split the 2014-15 campaign with the Ducks and Montreal Canadiens, collecting 14 assists, 23 points and 22 penalty minutes in 69 regular-season contests; he also appeared in seven 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs games with Anaheim. Originally signed as a free agent by Montreal on July 1, 2014, he was traded to Anaheim on Feb. 24, 2015. He previously tallied 39 points (13G, 26A) in 109 regular-season games with the Kontinental Hockey League’s Lev Praha (2011-14), in addition to eight points (1G, 7A) in 24 postseason tilts.
Garbutt, 30, has collected six points (2G, 4A) and 94 hits in 43 games with Chicago this season, after being acquired from Dallas on July 10, 2015. The Winnipeg native has notched 76 points (32G, 44A) over 241 career games with Chicago and Dallas (2011-15).

A coincidence this is another under performing Allan Walsh client traded?

Wasn't Sekac sent from the habs to the ducks for franchise power forward DSP? I thought Sekac had some decent skill and potential. He'll likely end up being a star on the hawks...

Stan Bowman has bailed on both parts (Garbutt, Daley) of Patrick Sharp trade. It is essentially now Sekac and Scuderi for Sharp and Johns.

Hagelin and Sekac gone very quickly after being acquired. I thought they were supposed to be the answer there...guess not.

That's two teams to bail out on Sekac now. Of course with the Blackhawks I'm sure he'll become a star.

I never understood why Anaheim did so much shuffling after last season. Very well could have been the Cup winner. Why not keep it together?

Seems like a worthwhile gamble for the Hawks.

That is brutal. Goes to show that all GMs make mistakes, even the best ones. To the fans hanging things like the Raymond signing on Trevy (and giving him a C or worse because of it), this is 10x worse than any 'mistake' our GM has made thus far.

He traded them both away. Its not like they are sitting on the roster earning a few million and they are getting nothing for them.

The Allan Walsh angle is interesting, Sureloss.

The point is he traded Patrick Sharp for crap all. Horrible trade. 30+ goal scorer as a cap dump. Yay.

Bigger issue with that trade is that he sold him in-division as a cap dump.
If you're going to give the guy away at least send him out of the division.
In retrospect the Flames probably should have been in on that one, $5.9 for this year and next is pretty good for Sharp.
Daley + Garbutt is probably something like Russell + Colborne.
Gaudreau-Monahan-Sharp...I could have lived with that.

Aging veteran who was also dropping in the Hawks lineup as time went on. You have to make tough choices when you're trying to hold together a decent roster, and depreciating assets with a large cap hit are a tough sell.
The harder trade was seeing Saad go I'm sure, but he managed to get Anisimov and Dano back in the deal. That's a decent return when you consider that the only reason they were trading Saad was because they wouldn't be able to afford him.
After the hot start by Dallas, they are falling back to the pack despite having Sharp, and the 'Hawks still look really, really good now leading the toughest division in hockey. I'd say the GM has done fairly well all challenges considered.

Blackhawks are once again best in the west. I don't see much reason to complain about their GM at the moment.

Wasn't the point of trading sharp cap relief?

Aren't the ducks looking for offense? This won't help.

Toews 10.5m
Kane 10.5m
Crawford 6m
Sharp 5.9m
Seabrook 5.8m (6.87 next year)
Keith 5.53m
Hossa 5.25m
Something had to give

Yes he successfully rid himself of a 30 goal scorer to make the cap work.
That doesn't mean it was a good hockey trade because it wasn't. He gifted Sharp to one of their rivals.

Which demonstrates that there wasn't a big market for Sharp, especially if he's dealt to a rival for a package like that... Usually dealing with a rival increases value, especially if there IS a market for the particular player in the first place.
I dont think a GM would purposely lose a deal that bad, especially with a rival.
