Surprising hire. He might give them a short term boost, but he's not the long term answer there.

Not a surprise. I will be very surprised if Richards finds another NHL head coach job as he's proven to be a below average head coach. As for Torts getting hired this will either go well or go very badly. I personally think he's a better coach than a lot of people give him credit for as that Canucks season was as much a Gillis implosion than anything else.

I think it's ridiculous that Vancouver gets a draft pick out of this.

The situation in Vancouver was odd. It's pretty clear that He wasn't really a Gillis hire, though Gillis took the bullet. Torts didn't even live in Canada. Didn't show up for many practices to the point that Gillis put a cot in his office to get him to show up etc. It was a disaster all around but an ownership driven one. It continues to be a disaster IMO.

This will be interesting for Columbus. They clearly need a kick in the rear and Richards clearly wasn't getting anything out of that roster.

I agree, ridiculous rules. They fired the bloke, so why are they now getting a juicy 2nd round pick for him being rehired somewhere else? Should only get a pick if a team poaches you coach from you.

Tortorella has gone on record saying that he was very surprised and upset by his firing in New York and admitted it was too soon to take another job. Just wasn't in the right frame of mind.

Lots of guys from that NY team are in Columbus now, maybe they made a suggestion?

And agreed, getting a pick for a coach or GM you fired is ridiculous.

The team wasn't doing well and should be better than they are. I think Tortz will improve the team but I think at least one player will want out of there before the end of the season because of him.

On the Fan, they mentioned that Dubinsky hates him, had harsh parting words after his trade.

Hmm, well that's no good then haha.

I'd like to see Columbus do well. Not sure if this helps them.

So the Canucks just bought a pick for $2 million-ish (I assume that's what they paid Torts to sit at home last year)?

I think Torts is as ridiculous as anyone, but the didn't live in Canada was, and continues to be, a terrible statement designed to make him look like he was light years away. He's American. His wife is American. They own businesses in the States. For tax purposes it was advantageous to live there. He was in Point Roberts which takes about the same time to get to the rink as driving from West or North Vancouver, and likely less time than Surrey. It's two minutes from Delta, which is where some players live. Many, many canucks and Grizzlies have lived there and will live there in the future. It's not like he was living in New York and working in Vancouver, making it impossible to get to the rink each day.

The Jackets need a quick turnaround which means they needed a proven coach not a green coach. You look around at the somewhat proven retreads available and there's Torts, Carlyle, Ron Wilson, Crawford, Jacques Martin, Brent Sutter. Hard to argue Torts is worse than any of those options. I may have picked Carlyle or Brent out of that group over Torts but it's no slam dunk and I don't know that locker room like their GM does.

Predictions on how long it takes him to claim that he's changed; that being away from hockey has allowed him to regain perspective.

I say 1:24 after he gets the mic.

Perhaps the not living in Canada thing doesn't matter, however, the not showing up to run practices thing. Ya that matters.

If Torts gets Columbus into the playoffs, is he front runner for the Jack Adams?
