Flames Sean Monahan named 3rd star of the week

https://www.nhl.com/news/sidney-cros...ek/c-279788242

Quote:
FIRST STAR - SIDNEY CROSBY, C, PITTSBURGH PENGUINS

Crosby shared the League lead with 2-5-7 in four outings to help the Penguins (40-24-8, 88 points) extend their winning streak to six games and move into second place in the Metropolitan Division. He opened the week with one assist in a 2-1 shootout victory against the New York Islanders March 15. Crosby then registered multiple points in each of his next three games: 2-0-2, including the winning goal, in a 4-2 triumph over the Carolina Hurricanes March 17, 0-2-2 in a 4-1 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers March 19 and 0-2-2 in a 6-2 win over the Washington Capitals March 20. In doing so, Crosby reached the 30-goal milestone for the seventh time in his 11 campaigns and also extended his point streak to 12 games (6-14-20). The 28-year-old Cole Harbour, N.S., native ranks third in the NHL with 31-45-76 in 71 appearances this season, including a League-best 14-21-35 in 24 contests since the All-Star break.

SECOND STAR - JONATHAN QUICK, G, LOS ANGELES KINGS

Quick went 3-0-0 with a 1.32 goals-against average, .953 save percentage and one shutout to help the Pacific Division-leading Kings (44-22-5, 93 points) post four victories and clinch their sixth playoff berth in the past seven seasons. He began the week by stopping all 32 shots he faced in a 5-0 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks March 14. In doing so, Quick (Milford, Conn.) earned his 41st career shutout to move past Frank Brimsek (Eveleth, Minn.) and John Vanbiesbrouck (Detroit, Mich.) for the most by a U.S.-born goaltender in NHL history. He followed that performance with 23 saves in a 4-3 overtime win against the New York Rangers March 17 and 27 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins March 19. The 30-year-old goaltender ranks second in the NHL with 37 wins in 58 appearances this season (2.14 GAA, .921 SV%, 4 SO), two shy of his career high established in 2009-10.

THIRD STAR - SEAN MONAHAN, C, CALGARY FLAMES

Monahan paced the NHL with five goals and tied for the League lead with seven points in four games to lift the Flames (31-35-6, 68 points) to a 3-0-1 record. He notched 2-1-3, including the winning goal, in a 7-4 victory over the St. Louis Blues March 14. Monahan scored again in a 4-1 triumph over the Winnipeg Jets March 16 before being held off the scoresheet in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche March 18. He capped the week with another 2-1-3 performance, including the winning goal, in a 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens March 20. The 21-year-old Brampton, Ont., native ranks second on the Flames with 26-29-55 in 71 appearances this season, including 12-14-26 in 23 games since the All-Star break.

Time for Eric Francis to write an article about swirling rumours that he wants to go east and play for the Leafs.

Way to go Sean. He's looked awesome for a while now. Love the way his two way game continues to get better. He had a ton of takeaways in the offensive zone against Colorado the other night.

On a side note... Have to hand it to Crosby. He took a lot of heat earlier this year. Crazy people were suggesting he was no longer the best in the league. Not to say Benn, Kane, or gaudreau aren't right up there... but Crosby sure can put a team on his back like nobody else.

Crazy to think where he'd be if he didn't give everyone a 20 game head start.

NHL logic: 4GP, 2G, 5A, 1GWG > 4GP, 5G, 2A, 2GWG

(Edited because I can't count.)

When Sean Monahan is 23 years old, I pity the league.

5 goals in 4 games doesn't count if your team's not in the playoffs? If anything, it's even more impressive to do something like that when (using your argument) you don't have anything to play for.

The best part is that 4gp 2g 5a was enough to be ranked ahead of Quick, but 4gp 5g 2a didn't even get that lol.

The answer is nothing.

It has plenty to do with everything. One is putting his team on his shoulders in the stretch drive for the playoffs. That's a big plus on his side when you're deciding who is more worthy of first star.

Francis wasn't the first to say that. There was an espn article at the beginning of the season that gave one player from each team that would retire with them, and one that would leave. Gaudreau was the the guy that would leave, based on many things that were said by Francis. It's not far fetched to assume something like that could happen. It hopefully doesn't, but it could happen.

I kind of thought Frolik might compete for a star this week with his 4G, 2A and 2 of his goals coming shorthanded.

I found his performances in the games this week a little more impressive then Monahan's.

Right.

And is there any indication they factor that in for the simple players of the week awards? It's entirely stats based, something for fans to get excited for when their player is named. It's really doubt it's debated that much.

Is it easier to put up points in a no pressure situation? Of course. That's not what this is about though, not this situation.

Only 3 back of Hall with 3 games in hand. Not gonna lie, that HF comment about how Monahan would be the Oiler's 4th line centre behind McJesus, Drasaitl, and RNH really rubbed me the wrong way. Gonna be sweet to rub it in that Monahan would be their leading scorer.

Monahan's going to finish with another really strong season under his belt. I recall reading an opinion on CP that Monahan was being carried by Gaudreau this year, and/or Monahan was an anchor weighing down Gaudreau. Sounds even sillier now.

Monahan has taken an unfair beating by the haters on HF. Even though he is the leading goal scorer and nearly the highest point enter from his class he is passed by Ristolinen but ahead of Drouin and Lindholm.

He is 21 and is approaching 2 30 goal campaigns. This is a player that you sign for 8 years out of his elc. To me Johnny gets $7.5-$8M and Monahan is $6.5-$7M per full term
