Kings sign Kopitar to 8 yr extension. $10 mil AAV
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Anze Kopitar's 8-year, $80M ($10M AAV) contract with LAK is, finally, in final stages of paperwork. So not officially "done" but very close

Gotta give credit where its due. A center of his size and durability is hard to come by. More of a Toews than Stamkos with almost as many cups. Not sold on 8 years though.

It's fair value. It's tough for LA to swallow because they're handcuffed by some bad contracts but pretty much every team in the league would pay that much to him.

Would have thought going the full 8 years would give them a bit of a discount.

He would get $70Mil X 7 on the open market. At this point, hes got his cups, he wants to get paid.
Stamkos will likely get a similar offer from Toronto if he hits the open market.

Yah, I'd rather pay Kopitar 10M per than Stamkos. Still, what a crazy contract.

Dimitri Filipovic @DimFilipovic
5 years from now Kings will have ~32M tied up in a 33 YO Kopitar, 36 YO Carter, 36 YO Dustin Brown, 35 YO Jon Quick, 39 YO Marian Gaborik.
Obviously not all are likely going to make it on the cap in the next 5 years. Kings will find a way to shed some of it.
But still pretty sobering when you think about it.
Lots of money and Kings will probably get another stanley cup or two out of it.

Gaudreau's contract is probably going to look great compared to these 10 mill plus contracts

I dont know.. If i was a smaller, prolific scorer in the league where I knew guys would be taking runs at me, I would have to consider how much longevity i have in the league. I wouldnt be thinking that im going to get hurt, but there is a possibility that there could be some concussions down the road or other serious injuries. Would i leave money on the table? Absolutely not.
Gaudreau is going to be in the top ten in scoring year after year for the most part of his career. Why would he not be looking for an 8x8+? If that be the case and the Flames eat up a few years of UFA, then $9mil+ could be a number his agent would be pushing for.

Crazy contract, but he got them 2 cups at the #1C. If by someday Bennett or Monahan does the same thing and get us 2 cups, I'll give him the pen to sign.
Having said that, LA annoys me and I hope this really cripples them and results in their eventual downfall.

Gaudreau is pending RFA, and that makes a HUGE difference when it comes to salary. He shouldn't get any more than Tarasenko did.

Ahh yeah, forgot about RFA.. But does eating up a few years of UFA not fall in favor of the player when it comes to dollar amount?
