Brandon Gormley on waivers. UPD: Clears
13th OA from 2010.
The Coyotes used the pick they acquired in the Jokinen trade to pick him.
Was once considered one of the best defencemen in the 2010 draft class.

Don't see how the Flames could possibly fit him in.
Seems more like a fit for Vancouver who need young d-men.

I wouldn't mind picking him up for the bottom pair and see what he can do (obviously he has potential). He is young and if he can do well, can potentially become a contributing member on the team when the likes of Wideman, Russell, Smid, and Engelland are gone.

No room here. We have too many NHL d-men already to fit in a tweener.

I'd like him, because who doesn't want another 1st round pick? But if he's had trouble cracking 2 teams, what are the chances he's good enough for us?

Buffalo is also a strong possibility they reportedly have been looking for a LHD for awhile now.

Seems crazy now, but his stock has obviously dropped a ton. Unless Brad has some insight as to how to get him going, the Flames should pass.

If we didn't already have Smid, Engelland, and Nakladal, yes.
But IMO we should be giving Nakladal a look soon here.

No space, even if we unload Russel at the deadline, we have some internal options (Nakladal, Kulak) which would be better asset management.
As for when Smid Engelland and Wideman are gone, we will have Kylington, Hickey and Anderson pushing for spots.

Not to disregard your opinion, but I personally don't think any of Kylington, Hickey, or Anderson will be pushing for spots before 2018. Maybe Hickey, but I definitely think both Anderson and Kylington need at least 3 years in the minors.

I understand your reasoning, but history has shown that there's very little chance that all of those guys make it in the NHL, let alone to the NHL.
I'm of the mindset that the more options you have, the better your position. If they do all end up excelling, then you deal from a position of strength and improve your club in some other area of opportunity.
Can never have too many good young assets.

Yes, but I agree fitting him in would be tricky. If a trade could be worked out to make room that moves a bottom pairing dman, that would be ideal. But then again, if there was a trade partner looking for a bottom pairing dman, then Gormley probably wouldn't be on waivers.

I think it's a moot point regardless, he'll likely be claimed before Calgary has a shot.

If Brad could trade one of Wideman, Engelland, Smid or Russell in the next 12 hours the. maybe. So most likely no. I'd almost rather give Nakladal a chance if we do trade a dman. Sounds like he's been very strong in the minors.

I would claim him, trade Russell. Nice young group mixed with vets going forward.
Giordano - Brodie
Gormley - Hamilton
Smid - Wideman
Nakladal

I'd rather trade Wideman for him than pick him up.
Either way someone would have to move, but I wouldn't mind. Haven't seen much of him though.
Edmonton? Another high pick to add to their line-up.

Well Gormley was projected to go higher than 13th, Fowler too. Of course Fowler has gone in a much different direction.
