Default Iran standoff with Saudi

This will be very telling for where the economic and political future of the Middle East is heading.

The mideast is such a disaster. Cant get along with the rest of the world or even amongst the region itself. Scary to think how this can end.

Possible Black Swan to save our economy. Ideally they sabre rattle for months until the supply glut dissipates. I can't decide lately which regime I despise more, it would be nice if both countries had a revolution.

It might go up a little as a result of this, but this is just a diplomatic extension of the row that's been simmering under the surface for ages. If it starts to get hotter, oil might fly.

Just guesses obviously, who really knows.

If anything oil will go down, Iran will dump its reserves onto the market, Saudi is already in trouble financially, I suspect they misread the Iran/US negotiations and this will turn out to be a #### up for them as well.

Saudi is a horrendously badly run country even by that regions standards

If that doesn't stink of corruption, l don't know what does. How a country like SA gets onto the f'ing HUMAN RIGHT council blows my mind. But then l remember they are rich. And it all makes sense.

Not only are they on the council, they hold the head chair.

Disband the ****ing UN already.

The two countries are already engaged in various proxy conflicts with each other. Iran is funding the Houthi rebels that SA is openly engaged in war with, and SA is funding their fair share of Sunni militant groups as well.

This particular incident just seems like a bunch of hot air from both sides. SA executes a Shia cleric, and Iran condemns it. They're both just trying to prop up their own religious propaganda.

I think that it may be time for a shift in policy for the middle east. As surprising as it sounds, Iran may be the better ally moving forward, especially with the Saudi's backing extremism all over the place.

The Iranians back just as much extremism.

I'd agree that something needs to be done about the Saudi's backing extremism, but I don't see why we have to back either of them. Both seem pretty bad to me.

Yes Saudi Arabia is appalling in their practices and shouldn't be on the council at all, but what you posted is an often misquoted fact that keeps getting perpetuated around the internet.

They just 1 of 47 rotating members of the HR Council. One of their ambassadors was appointed to a 5 member panel that helps vet experts for vacancies in their experts panel. They are not the head of the council, their ambassador is just the head of that panel that has 5 equal voting members, and any expert they were to appoint, would have to be ratified by the HRC at large. So basically no real power.

The Consultive Group evaluates applications for independent experts (who are mostly called Special Rapporteurs), ranking the top three candidates for each vacant mandate and providing justification for their nominations. The final decision over candidates rests with the President of the HRC, who has the power to accept or depart from the Group’s recommendation. The HRC then votes on the final candidate. Thanks, my google-fu wasn't showing that.

Either way they have no business being tied to anything human rights related.

Instead of fighting by proxy I would like to see both these countries bomb each other back to the Stone Age.

The term "Glass Parking Lot" is mentioned in certain strategic circles.

You do realize though, that the people who have nothing to do with this conflict would be the dead ones though, right?

I know you're joking, but it's a pretty ignorant statement
