Default The Battle of Alberta™

Perhaps I am being a bit hyperbolic here, but Sunday night we will witness the most significant (for both teams) Flames - Oilers game in nearly a decade??

With both teams playing well in December, the Flames with a 10-game home winning streak and the Oilers actually playing and acting like a professional hockey team, I am legitimately pumped for the return of the BOA Sunday night.

I can feel my Oiler rage getting stronger as I type this. That's a good thing.

Both teams are just as close to being a lottery team as they are making the playoffs so I would personally wait for a time when both teams face off with records well above .500.

That's irrelevant though, as both teams are within points of a playoff spot. Doesn't matter if they're also close to the bottom. The point is there has not been a BOA with this significance in a decade; there have never been playoff implications for BOTH during that time frame.

Both teams are within points of a playoff spot. Both teams are within points of a prime lottery spot.

I agree the game is significant for both teams... the problem is that they aren't chasing the same prize...

The Flames vs Oilers has been a ridiculously one-sided affair for the better part of five years now. Until Edmonton wins a few games against us in the same season it just can't be called a "battle". In recent years there is no denying it's been the "one sided drubbing of Alberta".

I prefer to look at it as "The Scheduled Allocation of Points to the Calgary Flames."

Can we be sued for suggesting that "the Oilers are actually playing and acting like a professional hockey team"?

We can't call it a true BOA until Mony, Gaudreau, Bennett et al are going head to head against McDavid, Hall, Draisaitl et al. The game on Sunday will be a tune up. They also play on Jan 16 and April 2nd. Not sure if McDavid is back for Jan 16, but that April 2nd game could be critical for playoff implications.

I dont know if we can but by God if anyone were to make such a blasphemous statement they should be sued into oblivion and then subsequently launched into an Elephant's anus.

The conflict in the Canadian North Second Most Western Province. The Thrilla in the OilSands.

The slap fight west of Saskatoon?

But I've never heard of this other term.

Hahahahahaha!

No.

The Oilers will be out of the mix by the end of January.

I was at this game last year and Johnny scored 2 goals in less than a minute and it was such a solid win start to finish domination.

Oilers are coming in off a back to back and the Flames will want to avenge the last home loss and set the new home win streak record. The fact this game means something for the Oilers is the best they could have hoped for given their record over the past decade

BOA interesting fact #1: The Calgary Flames have a 43-19-2 v. the Oilers since the '05 lockout (64 games). The Flames have not lost a season series outright to the Oilers since 2000-01

BOA interesting fact #2: Since the shootout was introduced in 2005, The Oilers have beaten the Flames only once in a SO. Fernando Pisani is the only Oilers player to ever score a SO winner on the Flames (and it was more than a decade ago - Nov 25, 2005).

BOA interesting fact #3: The last Oiler to score an OT goal v. the Flames was Shawn Horcoff on Mar 16, 2006

BOA (known) fact #4: Oilers=NG

Are the Flames fans nervous about the possibility of a no-good team playing gooder than the Flames?
