WJC Pre-Tourney: Canada vs Sweden. 10 AM. TSN
The final pre-tournament game for the Canadians before the Boxing Day tournament opener against the USA. The final cuts have been made for Canada, and it is the last chance they have to form chemistry and fine tune in game conditions.
Canadian lines at practice:
Quenneville-Strome-Marner
Perlini-Barzal-Virtanen
Crouse-Stephens-Konecny
Chartier-Beauvillier-Gauthier
Point
Chabot-Hicketts
Fleury-Hickey
Sanheim-Dermott
McKeown
It has already been announced Point will not play against Sweden, but will play on Boxing Day.
McDonald has been named the starter for this game. McDonald hasn't looked that great so far in the QMJHL this season or in the camp leading up to this tournament.
He needs to have a decent showing at this game. First of all to get confidence in himself, then that of his teammates and coaches, and finally Team Canada fans. McDonald still has a chance to be the starter over Blackwood for this tournament. If McDonald strings some strong performances together in the next 3 games, he could make the decision hard for Lowry when Blackwood's supension is up.
Sweden has a strong team this year, even with some of the questionable decisions to leave off Kovacs, Kylington, and Andersson. They should be a medal contender.
Notable players for Sweden:

Is Linus SÖDERSTRÖM related to former Flyers goalie Tommy Soderstrom?

Wouldn't have minded Sanheim as his partner either, but I like that Hickey is playing with Fleury - I bet their responsibilities grow as the tourney unfolds.

It's an insight to the memorial cup winning defence.

Not really a fan of the pressure being put on Hickey to leave BU and play in the WHL. Hmm, college experience in Boston, or all hockey all the time while riding the bus in Red Deer. Unless you can't make the grades there's nothing inherently more attractive about playing in the WHL than NCAA.

Virtanen may be no good, but that was a sick shot.

Follows that up by taking a shot instead of passing on a 3 on 1 and then steamrolling the goalie and getting a penalty. Yup. No good.

Very quick passing play and one-time shot on that Swedish PP. Chartier standing near the goal scorer but not really doing anything.

I forget how tough the Refs and rules are enforced in International hockey, especially Junior. Canada is going to have to adjust quickly and be more disciplined if they want to have success in this tournament.

I said in during the Belarus game that if they didn't get some discipline, the better teams will punish them. That didn't take long to come to fruition haha.

Nice pressure by Perlini and pass by Barzal to set up Strome. 2-1 Canada.
