How to know if a Jersey is a fake?
Hey guys, I am looking at getting a jersey online and curious about if it is real or not.
It has a Strap on it and is a Size 48... its the 48 that is giving me red flags...
Thoughts?

Yes, they stopped making authentic (with fight strap) jerseys in size 48 (just 46, 50, 52...). Good chance it is fake; post a pic if you'd like further confirmation...

If it is not close to retail price it's fake.

If the stitching on the letters looks "puffy" rather than flat.
Here's a good example...
See how visible the stitching on the left jersey is? That's a fake. The letters themselves usually don't sit well on the jerseys when they're fake too, for the same reason.
The stitching on the logo on the front of the jersey is also noticeably "puffy".
For the fight strap, on the fakes, it's thinner and sewn directly onto the jersey. On the authentics, the fight strap is sewn onto a much larger piece of fabric for reinforcement, and both the strap and reinforcement are sewn to the jersey. So, if you're looking at the back of the jersey, you'll see a small stitched rectangle with a cross through it. On the fakes, there may also be a slightly bigger rectangle around that (usually not). On the authentics, the small rectangle with the cross will be surrounded by a much larger rectangle.
Often, the people who make the fakes use the licensed replicas as their guide, so another tell-tale is if it has one of those size tags on the bottom because the authentics don't have those. Also, the bottom hem on the authentics don't have a slit in them like the replicas have.
Here's an example...
The two guys high-fiving in the middle are both wearing replica jerseys. At the bottom of their jerseys, you can see the size tag and the slit on the side of the jerseys. Authentics have neither of those things, but the fakes often do.

What size would a 48 be close to? a S or a M?

The stitching on the numbers is the biggest giveaway.
Can you ask for a close up of the stitches on the letters and numbers, as well as the logo?
Also, ask for photos of the inside of the jersey. the fakes usually have a backing on the inside of the stitches, where the real deal are sewn directly onto the jersey.
Here's a good example...
Also, the lace in the collar looks way too long. It looks like a shoelace.
I don't know the Penguins' jerseys well enough to say 100%, especially the blue ones. Usually, it's glaringly obvious just because the colours are off, but I don't know what exactly the colours should be for that one.

Yeah, looks fake, but it's a better one (either that or I don't know the Pens jersey that well).
I can spot a flames fake a mile away.

Definitely fake. NHL logo is shoddy, the back isnt mesh. No armpit mesh pieces. The front could almost pass for a legit 1.0.

Its for sure a fake.
The navy blue stripes should not be that thick, the stitching looks sloppy, the NHL Shield looks poorly cut, the numbers and namebar are awful.
I can confirm the previous statement, RBK Edge jerseys do not come in size 48.

For sure that jersey is a fake.
Take a look at the hem lines on the bottom. The front looks to be straight, whereas the back dips down. Pretty sure the front is supposed to match the back.
Also the shade of blue is wrong. (Could be just the picture though I guess).
Here is a legit Talbot jersey. Look how crisp the font and numbers are compared to the fake.
When you look at them side by side, huge differences!

The worst thing about those jerseys is that most of them are being sold on Kijiji and eBay for double, triple, etc. their actual value.
This thread would be a good source going forward for other people to come and post links to jerseys they are considering buying, just to confirm their legitimacy. Assuming they care, of course. Although it kills me to think that people are paying close to legit-retail prices for complete garbage.

This thread is filled with jersey snobs like myself with keen eyes.
Lots of non-hardcores probably get tricked without knowing, or they simply don't care.
I could easily see lots of grandma's and aunts not really knowing the difference when buying as gifts.
