Default The Redemption of Ladislav Smid

Admittedly small sample size, but I have been quite impressed with the play of Smid the past few games. He has been physical, moved the puck well and has had no noticeable brain farts. I had originally seen him as an anchor on the team, but now could see him keeping his place going forward.

So where do we sit for our D next year?
Gio - Brodie
Wideman - Hamilton
Smid - Engelland
X

I personally think there is no place for Russell and we should be selling him at the deadline. Furthermore, for cap reasons, I think we will need to get rid of one of Wideman, Engelland and Smid.

Who could/should we unload and how?

Trade Kris Russell for whatever and launch Dennis Wideman into the sun.

I always liked Smid. I'm glad he's healthy and contributing again.

Please Brad, get rid of Wideman.

As for Smid, it's a small sample size. Let's see where he's at by the trade deadline. He's no more then a bottom pairing D-man in my opinion.

Heard last night on the broadcast that Smid requested the drop to the A for conditioning.

Said he wanted to get back into game shape so he'd be a viable option for Hartley.

Guy may not wow you with his play, but I am loving the attitude. Clearly he wants to play and contribute.

Yeah, Smid's heart has never been in question, just his physical ability to play. He looks much faster this year, and has even been jumping up on the rush. Looks like all that rest did him some good.

I would be totally satisfied with a bottom pairing of Smid and Engelland for the next couple of years, and I hope that some of our prospects can step into that #4 role next to Hamilton, or Giordano as the case may be.

A healthy Smid is a solid NHL player.

We haven't seen this very often, but i'm glad we are now.

He's overpaid but I've never had an issue with him. He wont amaze you but he's a decent player. Same with Engelland

Smid adds some grit as well. He can drop the mitts.

Never had an issue with him, I like how he brings the physicality along with Engelland

I would be too, but $7 million on our bottom pairing is way too much. Fat has to be trimmed somewhere, and all of Wideman, Smid and Engelland are on the books for next year too. And Wideman has a NMC. As much as Smid and Engelland are reliable, other teams can find cheaper options for similar play.

Kris Russell is going to have to go, unless BT pulls a rabbit out of his hat.

Glad he's healthy, he adds much needed grit on the defense and is a stand up guy. I thought his career was all but over after his injury last year.

When did Smid ever need redeeming?

IMO there is no worse defensmen than Engelland. I find it really hard to believe that none of the kids in stockton could play at a level above his. I am incredibly nervous whenever he is on the ice. I've been happy with what Smid has brought in the last few games and feel he is a major upgrade over Engelland and I hope that he takes his regular spot once Russell comes back.

Hello person who hasn't watched a Flames game since February.

Ya, I haven't watched any games over the past few weeks, but Engelland gets a pass from me based in his play when Gio went down last season...he upped his game beyond what I thought was possible from him.

So, I'll change my question; 'since when did Smid need to be re-redeemed?'

I've barely noticed Engelland the last month. And that means he's doing his job perfectly as a #6.

I was not looking forward to Smid coming back in the lineup, based on last year.

I was wrong. He's been smart, quicker than I remember and is better with the puck than Engelland. I haven't noticed Russell's absence at all.

You are quite frankly wrong. Engo has been reliable all year and a good chunk of last year too. I daresay more reliable than Gio on many nights.
