No experience with the Ninja. However one piece of advice when getting a blender, always get one made of glass with the handle moulded as one piece with the pitcher. Easier to clean, and much sturdier unless you drop it of course.

I know nothing about blenders, but my wife won't shut up about her vitamix...so maybe those are good?

If you're a relatively frequent user, go for the Vitamix. It's expensive, but worth it in the long run (it's cheaper to spend a couple hundred more now than have to get a new one every 2 years).
We drink smoothies in the morning every day and use it quite a bit....and this thing is pure awesome. No need to pre crush certain ingredients like with other blenders, this thing just powers through it all in one shot. Other blenders we had wouldve produce clumpy inconsistent results...this one is always consistently smooth.
Plus the build quality is very solid. It comes with something like a 7-8 year warranty, and looks the part. Most other blenders we've had start to leak eventually, especially when you take them apart to clean....with the Vitamix you don't take anything apart. There's a reason you see Vitamix used at smoothie shops.
We had a cheapo Bullet before, which honestly was a nice little blender for the price, but it craps out after a year of use. I was pretty happy with it....till we got the Vitamix.

get a Waring Blender. Super powerful motor. We've use them in the lab to grind up rats. Imagine what it could do for your smoothy
here is the 3 HP model; ~$300

my wife and i went thru a TON of blenders... they'd only last 6 months to a year (we use it a lot... she loves smoothies and i love protein shakes... so lots of ice & frozen fruit)
i mentioned this to my folks and i guess one of them was in a thrift shop and saw this boat anchor known as the osterizer imperial. this is the closest pic i could find online (but ours is this nasty sorta vomit-green from the 60's/70's)....
this thing (although pretty ugly) is a blending tank and we've used it for the last number of years. we've had to replace the blade a few times, but that's it
i guess they "don't make 'em like they used to!"

I have an Osterizer as well, not the model shown, nor the ugly green one...and as you said, works very well. I too have replaced the blades and bought them at Myric Electronics right in Calgary.
I also own a Bosch Universal Mixer. It comes as a package with a blender. The blender does not have its own base and instead works off the motor of the universal mixer.

Another vote for the Vitamix. I've had mine for 7 or 8 years and it stills runs perfectly. I throw pretty much anything into it and it always comes out smooth. It's pricey but worth it IMO. If this one ever dies on me I'll buy another one in a second.

My grandmother bought me a vitamix when I moved out on my own years back. I didn't realize how expensive they are but I can attest to how awesome they are. Blends almost everything.
I put some raw chicken breast in it one time (one of my bachelor cooking experiments) and it sort of blended but then got suck and I thought I had screwed the motor because I smelled burning. So I turned it off and swore at myself and came back the next day, removed the raw chicken chunks and it still works!
So it doesn't blend raw chicken, but it will blend ice cubes no problem.

Here's my theory on this stuff. Everything sucks. Blenders, food processors, mixers, etc. No matter the brand, they're going to break way too soon. Because of this, I only buy Kenmore now. Not because they're better than anything else, but because you can walk into Sears when they do break, and with no hassle whatsoever, walk out with a brand new one. No receipt even needed as they can't deny that you bought it at Sears because Kenmore is only available at Sears. I'm on my second blender doing this. Any appliance we buy is Kenmore.

I got a Kitchen aid 5 years ago, still running great and use it about 5 times a week with friozen fruit.
My Moms' Osterizer is still kicking and she got it in the late 70's.
