Well that's not gonna end up well for him at all. I dunno what else to say really. Pretty stupid to be bringing guns into canada, I guess.

Not much to go from on that article. Is this an unregistered 22 in the back seat of a pick-up? Or is this a .357 hand gun on the console while driving around? Not near enough info to judge whether this really makes him a criminal or not imo.

Well that all makes him a criminal assuming he's guilty.

there are different regulations in Canada for possession and transport of a non restricted firearm ie .22 rifle as opposed to a restricted firearm ie .357 handgun. The difference is really important because it could mean jail time or not for Ian White depending on the classification of the firearm in question.
The American comment is simple minded.

Considering the article states Ian White can face up to 2 years I think we know it wasn't a .22 in the backseat. And even if it was it still makes him a criminal.

If the most he faces is 2 years, it wasn't an indictable offence. So you might just want to dial back the rhetoric a little.

According to Canada's Criminal Code, White faces a maximum of two years in prison for each careless use charge, up to five years in prison for the unauthorized possession charge, up to five years in prison for possession a firearm in an unauthorized place, up to five years in prison for unauthorized importing of a firearm and up to four years in prison for a breach of recognizance

Really? Do you think they write a different firearms law for every specific gun? There may be some different laws for handguns vs. assault rifles vs. hunting rifles, but you definitely can't draw any conclusions from that statement.

The difference is that there would be tens if not hundreds of thousands of farmers who could be considered criminals at this very moment by the very letter of the law, if it was in fact a .22 in the back seat.
The point is that the article references many laws but gives zero insight into the actual circumstances or scenario at question.
There are many "laws" that can carry a maximum sentance of 2 years in jail and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. Very rarely are the maximums required or enforced.
I think that it is a click bate headline and nothing more at this point. Once there are more than zero details surrounding the incident(s) then feel free to bash away.
Just because you are afraid of, or don't understand why some people might have guns does not give you the right to abuse those that might want some due dillegence before casting him off as a "criminal". Are people who also get speeding or parking tickets also criminals?
