Default Fish Market Calgary

Hey folks,

I need to purchase some Sockeye salmon so that I can make smoked salmon for Christmas. I've previously bought my salmon at Boyd's on 14th Street and this year I was going to try the fish market in the University shopping centre but it is now closed because of the fire earlier this month.

So I'm looking for suggestions on where I should go to get some Sockeye. Should I stick with Boyd's?

Pelican Pier in the NW is another place to consider

I've gotten fish from this place & thought the quality/freshness was really good.

It's in Brick Plaza. On Macleod and....94th Ave I believe. Same parking lot as Chapters and Buffalo Wild Wings.

Can't remember the name of it, but I like the one in Crowfoot. Right beside Crowfoot Wine & Spirits.

Curious as to why you are after Sockeye specifically? The color?

Chum/Dog salmon will be the cheapest, and also smokes the best due to it's drier flesh.

Sockeye mostly because of the colour and appearance but also I find it has the best flavour.

Chum/dog salmon is best for chum and feeding dogs.

I haven't gone personally, but my dad goes to City Fish for fresh oysters or chunks of sashimi grade salmon. I'm sure you can get Salmon from them. They don't have sockeye listed specifically, but I'm sure you can call and get it special ordered.

Fresh dog is fantastic eating salmon. It is named dog due to it's teeth/jaw. The flesh, when fresh, is not easily distinguishable from Spring/Koho/Sockeye. Also, if you are feeding any raw salmon to a dog, you will likely kill it eventually, see Neorickettsia helminthoeca, or Salmon Poisoning Disease.

They don't appear to have Sockeye.

BTW - there are 2 farmers markets on Blackfoot; Calgary Farmers Market (near Heritage) and Crossroads Market (off Ogden). Market Seafood is the Calgary Farmers Market off Heritage.
