Default Karri Ramo

What do Flames fans think of goalie Karri Ramo, just out of curiosity. he had been fairly solid this year, but only has 82 games under his belt. With potential, do you think he can turn into the next Kiprusoff?

A sufficient starter for the rebuild. Who knows what he can turn into.

I like him. He has the skill to be a very good goaltender, and I still think he is going to get better, but the biggest thing I notice is that he has his team's trust. And if he gives up a goal they work hard to get it back for him.

As much as I love Kipper, he kind of handicapped Calgary in that they were drafting back-ups, there was really no need to find a starter. This is the first time Calgary has had a goalie with the capabilities to be a starter... I'm excited for Ramo, I think he has a great opportunity to really take the reigns and run with it.

Not Ramo, but damn Ortio even looks like Kipper out there.

I have high hopes for the Flames goaltending in 3 years as I expect Ortio and/or Gillies to take it and run.

As for Ramo, I do think he is good enough to be an NHL starter. Took him some time at the start of the season but is rounding into form nicely. At this point there is no way I trade Ramo for Reimer for example.

I really like Ramo... he is very solid. It will be interesting to see if he continues to get better, levels off, or regresses next season.

I also have high hopes for Ortio, he looks like the real deal.

Ramo has been all the team has needed him to be. To expect more out of him or expect him to be Kipper ala 2004 is a ridiculously lofty expectation. An unrealistic expectation to be honest. Kipper went god-mode and that's an extremely rare place to get to. His GAA was 1.69 and SV% .933 in 2004 which was phenomenal.

Ramo this year is 2.57 GAA and .913 SV%.

Kipper's last 3 years are:
2011- 2.63 GAA and .906 SV%
2012- 2.35 GAA and .921 SV%
2013- 3.44 GAA and .882 SV%

So really, Ramo is in the ballpark as far as a starting goalie goes if we are collectively thinking Kipper's last few years were worthy of a legit #1 goalie.

Ramo is just fine and in my mind not the team's most imminent problem. Plus he could get better.

Hes good and worth having as a starter next year, but a Mikka Kiprusoff he is not. Ortio still needs a long look.

Ramo looks like a good stopgap solution. He has got fairly effective positioning and does look like your traditional butterfly goaltender. What stands out for me is that he never seems to panic too much. If he lets in a goal, he has a quick break and gets right back to work. He didn't look rattled despite letting 3 goals in so quickly against the Rangers. It must be something in the Finnish water...all the Finnish goaltenders to grace the Flames seem to have this attitude.

That being said, he's got a lot of work to do if he ever hopes to be in the same tier as Kiprusoff. He gives up pretty big rebounds and seems slow crossing the net (as in really slow at times). I'm not sure there's enough time left to make that happen. I certainly don't think he'll make the miracle saves Kiprusoff did but he'll play a style that will keep at least keep the Flames in games.

TBQH I feel that he has played better since coming back from injury. His rebounds don't seem to be as crazy

Depending on next season I think he might even be more than just a stopgap. I won't start throwing too much praise around, but he's well exceeded expectations.

Not likely to reach Kiprusoff territory, but I like him better than Eddie Lack (which in some people's minds--not mine--would put him in the top 20).

I never really considered him stop gap at all. Just a low risk, high reward project that was still young enough to be part of the long term solution.

To me he's an average to below average #1 goalie. Burke will look to upgrade. He does have another year on his contract so it will be hard for him to go anywhere.

I don't quite understand why people get the "below-average" ranking as what Ramo is.

To me, he was a bit of a wild-card entering this season, started off poorly, but you can noticeably see a positive increase to his game (and corresponding stats) right up until his last set of games.

There is little reason at this point to suddenly think that he will not be able to continue getting better and even become an above-average netminder in the NHL. Without looking at his stats, his last 15-20 games PROBABLY puts him above average already. Why are people so ready to cap his improvement at exactly what he is now, when he has been showing progression right up until the Tampa game?

I think hes a very competent NHL goalie and has exceeded my expectations overall. If he was on a playoff team he would put up similar numbers to most of the non vezina contending starters in the league.

I have no problem going into next season with Ramo in the cage.

Im really excited for Ortio and Gilles to pan out but in the mean time Ramo is perfect and continues to be perfect.

We have to stop comparing anyone to Kipper. Kipper was a generational goaltender. Put him on a constantly contending team and he'd be in Lundquist territory.

Ramo is good for now, but theres no pressure yet. Time will tell.
