Belly fat deadlier than obesity alone, study suggests
http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/obesit...inal-1.3311121
Quote:
People who weigh a normal amount when they step on the scale may be at higher risk of dying in the medium term if their fat is concentrated in the abdomen, say doctors who want everyone to use a tape measure to measure themselves.
Researchers have long suspected the body mass index, or BMI, that tells you how appropriate your weight is to your height isn't a good measure of body fatness — particularly fat that accumulates in the belly and within abdominal organs and leads to inflammation, glucose intolerance and other complications that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.
|
Quote:
"The worst fat is in the midsection. It's in the intra-abdominal cavity, in the organs," Padwal explained. "Fat infiltrating that area of the body is definitely the worst in terms of future risk of cardiovascular complications and future risk of death."
That's because central obesity is linked to fat infiltrating the pancreas and liver, which in turn is linked to risk of Type 2 diabetes, fatty liver and eventually end-stage liver failure, he said.

Im posting this as any FYI, not as a initiator to a BMI discussion.

Useless article. How does one get rid of belly fat is the useful one.

Nice to see the BMI being further discredited as an indicator of health (the researcher goes as far as to say the BMI should not be used clinically) but I can't help but wonder how body types affect the usefulness of the hip-to-waist ratio measure they seem to endorse. What impact does this have on people with "child-bearing hips"?

Belly fat is also linked to high testosterone, which has been shown to increase the risk of heart disease.

Think you got that backwards. Low testosterone is related to increased belly fat which increases risk of heart disease.

I have heard that the use of probiotics is helpful, not in weightloss, but in balancing fat accumulation away from the abdomen. Can anyone speak to this, or is it more snake oil?

so what you're saying is that if I have no fat what so ever on my stomach; if it looks like I have boobs because my rib cage sticks out over my belly button, that like, I'm gonna live forever?
Sweet!
Now back to pizza & beer

One thing to remember is to properly measure your waist. Your waist is slightly above your belly button.
Its common for guys with big beer bellies to wear their pants below their gut. Theyve probably got 40 inch waists but wearing their pants below gut lets them wear a 32 inch pant size. Combine that with vanity sizing that has hit mens clothes. That means your pant size likely isnt an accurate reflection of your waist measurement. Grab a tape measure to be certain and measure above the belly button slightly.

Good for parents and big belly dudes with fatty livers to read.

“This study demonstrates that ‘a calorie is not a calorie.’ Where those calories come from determines where in the body they go. Sugar calories are the worst, because they turn to fat in the liver, driving insulin resistance, and driving risk for diabetes, heart, and liver disease. This has enormous implications for the food industry, chronic disease, and health care costs.”

Fair enough...I was always under the impression that the build up of visceral fat was caused by DHT, which was caused by high test levels. It looks like it's caused by DHT followed by a drop in test levels.
Interesting then. Since high test levels cause heart disease, but so do low test levels. So you need the exact balance of test levels to avoid heart disease?
