Default "Flames Fended Off JG Trade Offers"-Herald

Thought this deserved its own thread--some good Conroy quotes in there.

Herald article about early offers Flames received for Johnny Hockey.

I read "fended off" as "fielding" offers. I got hyper-concerned until I glanced the title after clicking.

Would be interesting to see what Burke considered to be good offers at the time.

Nice article, I believe there was a rumor of the 6th overall pick, used to select Monahan and JG for Seguin around the time he was dealt. That I would say is a good offer. Obviously glad it wasn't made, but Seguin is a player.

Gonna be one of those "wtf, zetterberg was a 7th rounder?" Kind of picks for the Flames... Nice snag by Feaster and his team

I remember asking Burke at a season ticket holder event what he thought of Johnny, and he went off about how small he was and that guys like him were unlikely to succeed in the NHL. Real snarky about it too. I bet other guys in the organization (Button?, Conroy?) had to talk Burke out of accepting a decent trade offer for Johnny. Regardless of how it went down, I'm glad they turned down those offers.

Mark Stone who tied Johnny last season for the rookie points lead also has 4 points already so far in his sophomore season..

Hope he bombs. There can only be one sophomore sensation this year.

For some reason this made me laugh hysterically.

JG: "hi brad, craig, listen i gotta talk"
Conroy: "Whats on your mind?"
JG: "I think I want to be traded"
Brad: "no you don't"
JG: "yah... you're right i don't, have a great afternoon guys!"
Conroy: "you too"

I remember those comments, to me seemed more like a guy trying to taper fan expectations for a player to give him the best chance at developing free of the added pressures of a Canadian market.

But yes, let's continue to pile on Burke and speculate about things despite the fact nothing but good has happened to this org. since he joined.

I had heard from a NJ Devils scout that the Rangers, bruins and devils all made serious offers for him. He felt it was into a matter of time before he was dealt. This was after his second college season

I obviously didn't post this in past as I didn't want to set off a CP ####storm.

I'm glad you're on board. I don't like Burke either. I don't like how he ridicules his own players and talks down to fans. He could learn a thing or two from Connie on being a decent individual.

I was actually at that event too and I agree with how Conroy4Mayor felt about Burke's comment. I felt the same way and was terrified that he was going to eventually deal Johnny.

I don't think Burke needs a lesson on being decent, considering his extensive charity work and strive towards positive social change in hockey. You may not like his demeanour but he's undeniably a good person.

Besides, kind of nonsense to judge him for wanting to trade a player when there's no proof it's true and the player was never traded. I know we're all glad Johnny is around and I bet Burke is too!
