Maybe just because age and the movement towards paying for potential instead of past performance.

Big difference between a 29 yr old and a 24 year old in the new NHL when it comes to contracts.

I think the feeling is mutual, the Penguins would never hire Rutherford again either. With MacTavish gone he would be my nominee for the worst GM in the game.
