An app that lets you rate other people. What an awful idea.

"Man that guy at the store was pretty rude. I know nothing about him or what was going on in his life, but I'm gonna go find him on peeple and give him a 1. Jerk."

And unfortunately, I could easily see it being abused by bullies, particularly in schools/colleges, leading to kids feeling depressed/worthless/suicidal because they've only got a rating of 2/10.

Somewhere, a defamation lawyer is smiling and pouring himself another cognac.

I like how the creator of the app has disabled most of the feedback functions of the various promotional sites she was using, because folks were leaving negative feedback...

This will come to an end as soon as the phone numbers of the founders are publicized. Then we'll see how well they rate.

The fact that this company is somehow worth 7.6M is the real travesty.

So basically someone submits a number of a person, and that person is in the database without their consent? How is that even legal?

How is this even legal?

One thing though I have always wished for is having a site like the BBB, but for customers. The BCB. One where businesses can vet out problem customers, so they can reserve their right to decline service. There are just as many, if not more bad customers, than bad businesses. The only trouble would be providing records to substantiate claims a customer is litigious, a habitual merchandise returner, or just an abusive idiot.

I know it would never happen, but it would be so helpful.

So what's to stop a person or a group of people from going through the phone book and just submitting random numbers of people and populating their database with a ton of numbers without their consent?

I saw this PEEPLE thing show up on my internets today and how it was "disgusting" so I just scrolled by. I even heard co-workers discussing it and (though I'm both curious and extremely rude) I didn't interrupt to ask what it was about because I thought it was about PEE.

Maybe a "rate my urine colour" site, or another health app that tells you when to drink water, or tracks how often you take a piss or something and what it says about your overall constitution and lifestyle.

Who the hell named this thing? I suppose they were being clever and the "PEEP" means you can "peep" on other human beings, by seeing how they were rated. But still, what a bad name. Terrible idea, but a really awful name to boot.

Fun fact! The creator is from Calgary.

This app will be shut down before it even launches.

Though to their credit, they ran a story in the herald (?) about a week ago and now this thing has exploded into them getting front page on Wired/Washington Post, on Good Morning America, and all over social media.

There's no way this company is worth the ~$7mil they state...just another terrible tech evaluation. They also have absolutely hilarious (and probably bogus) investors on their website (forthepeeple.com) however their site seems to be down.

The fact that they are Canadian is what is really going to burn them. In the US, they could probably argue Section 230 immunity. But that doesn't exist here. They will probably be held liable for any defamatory commentary. If they even get this thing launched at all, they are going to be sued into bankruptcy within months.

People are getting up in arms about this app without understanding it. For my understanding it is for rating people like babysitters, painters, mechanics, etc, who have signed up for the service to lend some feedback and credibility to potential clients.

Consider it Homestars but for individuals who don't have a company or work at a few places (hairstylists, etc) and their reviews wont follow them.

Its not about being able to rate each and every human you want.

If I understand it correctly, if you're on facebook, you can be rated. There's no opt out option, hence a large portion of the outcry. The app is centered around being able to rate anyone you want.

edit: I misspoke...

It's like a bad nightmare from middle school — an app that lets people rate anyone they known on a scale of one to five for all the world to see. And it's scheduled to launch in November.

The app is called Peeple. As imagined by creators, Julia Cordray and Nicole McCullough, there's no way to opt out.

The app's tag line is "Character is Destiny." The creators see it as a way for people to learn what the world thinks about them and showcase the content of their character.

The idea is that if you know someone's cell phone number, you can create a listing for them. You then rate them with between one and five stars, saying whether you know them personally, professionally or romantically.

If someone creates a listing for you, you'll get a text telling you they've done so. As of now, there's no way to say you'd rather not participate and no way to keep someone from creating a profile on you.
