Default DOTA 2 International Tournament Prize Pool - $10 Million & still growing!

Had this in the video game thread a few weeks back. But this single esports tournament now has a larger prize pool than for the US Open, The Masters, or Tour de France. And the prize pool continues to grow.

Based on splits in past years, the winner would get half the pot.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2014/06/2...its-10-million

As the finals for the International 2014 Dota 2 tournament approach, the prize pool keeps growing. In just over two weeks, the largest pool in eSports history has accrued another $1 million USD, and reached the $10 million mark.

For anyone interested in The International for DOTA 2 they just updated the website with a nice overview. Prize distribution, how to watch, etc for anyone who might be interested.

http://www.dota2.com/international/overview/

As a fan of both playing and watching DOTA games I'm looking forward to it, I'm sure there will be some great games to watch.

Was in Bellevue for a wedding this past weekend and it turned out part of The International was being played in our hotel. I don't really know much about the game other than having watched the "Free to Play" documentary by Valve. It was a pretty impressive setup, and also funny as hotel guests had to walk through the player practice area in order to access the mall that is attached to the hotel. Put some pictures in an album here: http://imgur.com/a/NGN2D

Ended up talking to some players/casters that were staying in our hotel. Only person I recognized was 'Dendi' from the documentary. Pretty crazy how much pressure these guys are under with the amount of money that's at stake.

For those like myself who are unfamiliar with the game, I would suggest tuning in this weekend to the newbie stream. Sounds like a great way to tune in and get an understanding of the game.

Dota nerd here as well and I'm super excited to stream parts of the tournament this weekend. Would love to see a for fun ability mode at their all stars game too. That'd be unique.

The pressure would be huge from their sponsors and for themselves. This is all they have in life and most of the stars come from poor backgrounds (as seen in the documentary). I think dendi is still in his early 20's? But that's basically the prime of his gaming career so he'll have to bank up while he can.

Thanks for this, that stream is super helpful. I tried watching some of the matches when I was a the hotel and had zero idea what was actually going on. Even watching the regular casting was hard to figure out the game.

As an FYI, I would recommend loading up Dota 2 in steam and playing some of their training module. It's a good little intro into the game mechanics and reviews the types of heroes you'll encounter in any given 5v5 game.

A big achievement for gamers - ESPN3 is showing the tournament on TV. Yeah it's ESPN3 (which I believe is a pretty bad channel), but its a move in the right direction.

Edit: can view replays here for any game - http://www.twitch.tv/directory

How much do you think actually goes to the players? Their sponsor must take the lions share if not all?

This is pretty big step for esports in general. It's too bad it's not Evo.

espn3 is what they call anything they show online. There is no channel.

Out of curiosity, does the money basically come from the players buying in? Seems like it is more like gambling (ie poker tournaments) than a sporting tournament. Surprised it is not running into some legal issues, unless I am not getting it. I guess there are pay to play mini tour golf events that are basically run like that too that don't seem to get in any trouble.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there's a buy-in for the players. AFAIK, Valve (the company that makes Dota 2) put in the first $1.5M and the rest of the pot has come from fans around the world buying "The Compendium". I don't know what The Compendium is, but apparently it costs $10, with $2.50 from each purchase going towards the prize pool. Quick napkin math would indicate that about 3.7 million people purchased The Compendium.

[Edit]
A Google search reveals that The Compendium is a collection of in-game items and perks for Dota players.

Grand Finals is on, sitting at 2-1 right now. Could be the clinch game here.

There wasn't any last minute drama but still a great tournament played by Newbee. C9 and VG were solid too.

P.S Can't wait for all random deathmatch to be fully released. Played a couple games of it and missed the craziness of it from Dota 1. Also excited to play as Techies!

Historically large price pool, historically bad finals. Shame that it was so unexciting compared to previous years given that the amount of money involved got so much publicity.

Such a wet fart compared to normal high level dota competition.
