Flames captain Mark Giordano leading through actions instead of words
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sport...service=mobile
Duhatschek article on Giordano.
Joe Colborne was talking about leadership styles and how they can vary from team to team and individual to individual. There is the outgoing, trash-can-throwing style, popularized by Mark Messier and others, players who wear their hearts very publicly on their sleeves. Then there are the strong, silent types, who lead through their actions as opposed to their words.
According to Colborne, the Calgary Flames’ captain Mark Giordano fits snugly into the latter category.
So lucky to have this guy.

Honestly, I'd prefer a Captain that would show leadership on ice and may not be as vocal rather than the opposite.

good enough read, but a top-notch cliche in the headline...tomorrow: Flames respect the guys in that room over there and know they'll need to play a full 60 minutes.

I prefer Alex Ferguson's style of leadership - throwing boots at players' faces. Or Roy Keane's - choking teammates by the throat....

I prefer the Mark Messier style of leadership where a player shows it on and off the ice. Sometimes a verbal blast from the captain in the dressing room is needed.

I think having a fairly quiet captain who leads my example is great but when something needs to be said, he should step up and say it. That doesn't mean it has to be nice, when they do talk, people in the room should be listening because everyone should respect what the captain is saying. Very loud and obnoxious captains usually start to get redundant and teammates stop listening. I think there is a perfect balance in there somewhere.

Just because he generally leads with his play and example, doesn't mean he can't tear a strip off someone when need be.

But the verbal blast means more if it comes from a guy who doesn't do it all the time. If Gio ever had to yell at one of the kids, you can bet it'd be listened to.
I like that the captain is a guy who went from undrafted to "had to play in Europe to earn a one way contract" to an elite defenceman in the NHL. That mere fact shows something every single guy in the system.

Indeed. I'd be willing to bet that Jooris' success was a direct result of inspiration and leadership from Gio's story. In other words, Jooris probably doesn't make the NHL without being around a guy like Gio and knowing his story.
I also bet if Gio starting yelling at Johnny, Johnny would start crying.
