Where to stay in NY for a couple of days
So, like the title says, does anyone have any advice on where to stay to someone who may end up in NY for a couple of days?

No idea what the cost was, because my mom took me and my brothers there a few years ago (I'm sure it's on the higher end), but we stayed at the Library Hotel on Madison Ave. It's easy walking to the public library, grand central station, Time Square, museums and central park. The hotel itself is really cool, as it's essentially a library with a different subject on each floor, you can just pull the books off the walls and read. There's also a roof-top bar, which is awesome.

An Airbnb in Queens or Brooklyn probably wouldn't be super bad.

NYC is uber expensive. I used hotwire two times and got some semi reasonable deals that were close to $100 USD a night in Manhattan.

My wife and I stayed here when we went http://www.thejewelny.com/
A pretty good location across from Radio City and Rockefeller, we walked to Central Park and Times Square.

Had some friends stay in New York and have used AirBnB quite successfully.
If not, the W Hotel on Lexington has been reasonable. Keep in mind all hotel rooms in the budget range are always very small in New York.
http://www.thegothamhotelny.com is a very cool hotel with a great location for walking.

Now, I get that thats not exactly a brilliant review but in fairness that guy is barely literate.

Stayed here a couple years ago. Nice place, huge rooms (it was a full apartment) and was dirt cheap at the time.

Use hotwire. Check reviews extensively. Stay somewhere central in Manhattan.

NYC also, generally, has a bed bug problem. So all the hotels have them at some point.
So yeah...reviews are very important. There are also websites that track bed bug outbreaks. Avoid hotels with recent outbreaks.
That being said, there a lot of cool little boutique hotels. I stayed at the Marcel near Gramercy Park. Great location and facility for relatively cheap.

We stayed at the Westin near Times Square. It was really nice...we had some kind of package to stay there which made the price more reasonably iirc.

I stayed here last time, I was in NYC. It is located between ChinaTown and Little Italy - it's tucked away from the touristy area which is what I liked. 2 block walk to the subway station - my only complaint was that it was kind of hard to find when looking for it drunk at night

I usually end up staying at the Holiday Inn just below Madison Square Garden. It's a good mix of affordable and decent quality, with a solid location that's close to a few subway lines. Rooms are small....but it's NY, you're not going to be spending a lot of time in the hotel anyway.
If you can splurge a bit, The Standard is pretty awesome.

When I went down for the Flames games in February, I got a surprisingly decent rate at the Wyndham New Yorker (an old hotel with a big red "NEW YORKER" on the side that you've probably seen in a lot of movies). It's a block away from MSG and Penn Station and there's a subway stop right outside the door. It was one of the smallest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in, but that's Manhattan for you (and how much room do you really need?).
I checked Hotwire and the deal I got wasn't that much more than what Hotwire had and I knew exactly where I was staying.

Expensive hotels aside, NYC is a gem of a city. I've only been there three times and figure I can go there once every year and never get bored by the city. Tons of history, food, arts and if like sports, you're in heaven.
