ATVs - Tips on a buying used?
I realized recently that i'm getting much older than I feel. As a result, i've decided that in the next year I am going to buy an ATV and rip around the hinterland next spring/summer/fall.
I see there are an abundance of ATV and Side by Sides for sale on Kijiji and other places. I expect with the economy being what it is there will be more. Some have started to pop up at auctions as well.
Having ZERO experience with them, i'm open for advice on what to watch out for, what to look for and what else I should be looking for (in a trailer for example).
Curious as to people's thoughts.

My brother has one of those and finds it great to use in the winter at his lake house.

Don't turn into an off-roading D-bag and ravage our wilderness. Stay in designated areas and be respectful.

Depends on a few things, just went through much the same thing as you.
Our decision was between quads and a side by side. Very different styles of driving, side by side is more like everyday vehicle driving with a wheel and pedals. Quads of course have handlebars and you are sitting over top of it.
Depends on where you can drive it. Some trails are too narrow for a side by side.
Where will you store it and what will you haul with? Lots of options, truck decks can handle two quads. One quad can fit in the bed of a pickup truck.
We ended up getting a quad trailer, and can fit two quads on there and store it on one side of the garage.
I would be cautious buying used quads on kijiji. Guys trash the hell out of them. Look for ones where the original owner is selling because they bought it and never rode it. If possible get it inspected at one of the atv dealerships in town before buying.

ive got three young daughters so my use will be more recreation than adventuring. Extended family has pasture land we'd drive it on - prairie and forest. I really like the idea of the side by side. Maybe it's the roll bars but it seems safer to me but still a blast to rip around in.

You are better off trying to buy a used honda/yamaha than you are buying a used polaris/arctic cat. They may cost a little more but won't leave you stranded. Ride on designated trails within the land use areas and tread lightly. A quad trail width and a SXS trail width are 2 different things. SRD will be putting up proper width controls as they continue their flood recovery repairs to the areas to make sure people ride on proper trails that are designated by width of your machine. They have already nuked the "elbow falls trail" because people won't listen. Its easier for them to close trail than it is to deal with the donkeys out there.

If you can get a chance to ride both, I highly recommend doing that. I know the idea of a roll cage sounds good, but i think it can also give a false sense of security. They are still pretty easy to tip.
They also have 4 seater side by sides, which we briefly considered. Those start to get really big though, so storage becomes a consideration, and transportation as well. They are quite expensive as well.

my thought is that if you buy and atv, spend the winter scouring kijiji for people giving away unwanted furniture, pick up and store it until may long - then haul it out to maclean creek, whooop it up for a weekend and light the furniture on fire and walk away.......
seriously though, to me a quad looks like way more fun - no real tips on buying one though, other than it might make sense to look at something at a dealer to get a sense of pricing, as well as the cost of getting something that has presumably been certified or soemthing by the dealer
