Default Calgary man out of a job after racist tirade caught on video.

Cameras, cameras everywhere. People better start behaving. This guy obviously deserves some consequence for his action. All of his behaviour aside, I know it is hard to ignore, I am more interested in this camera phenomena. They seem to be everywhere and people are being constantly watched. Starting to get a bit invasive in my opinion.

He lost his job?

Oh... that's a shame.

The amount of Internet shaming for almost everything might be out of hand but if it had any purpose it would be this. Hard to feel bad for him.

The tirade was way over the top but I think losing a job over it is a bit much.

As for cameras, in this case they are installed for the cabbies security and in this case I think it was warranted. They even have a sign that says there are cameras so I am really ok with that. As long as notice is posted that you can be recorded on camera I think it is ok in a personal location (store\car\home etc) In a public place I am still on the fence about being recorded.

I completely disagree.
No company wants to be associated with an asshat like that.

This guy was obviously drunk and even that doesn't excuse him one bit of his behavior.

The only thing is this incident happened on Dec. 2013 and was brought to light recently. From a legality standpoint, I wonder if the longer 18 months time frame affects the legitimacy of the punishment (losing his job).

I meant if something questionable you did 10 years ago just came to light recently, can your company fire you still?

I also have a tough time with the internet shaming, purely because it forces people into jumping to conclusions way too fast.

But as said, if there's any good purpose for it, this is it.

If they think it will affect his ability to keep constructive relationships at work, then I think they can and should fire him.

The other video they showed of the girl being a total racist too just makes you wonder how much this actually happens and just goes unreported. I imagine we'll be hearing about how it was the booze that made it all happen and he has non-white friends.

People are often missing out on incredible life stories by being racist dickheads to cabbies rather than talking to them.

Man, that video is hard to watch.

Good on the cabbie for keeping his cool. I know CJay 92 contacted the guy and gave him and his family a bunch of stuff like gift certs as a sign of support. I'm sure others have reached out as well to re-iterate that this guy's views are not representative of Calgarians, or Canadians for that matter.

Internet shaming these days is like tarring and feathering and stoning of the olden days.

Used for justice, revenge or just public humiliation for an act done wrong. You could see it being a deterrent for some people too.

Except back them only the people in your village knew. These days everyone in the world could potentially know in a very short timeframe.

Are you serious? This jack### is about to be charged and he shouldn't lose his job? Being a complete racist should absolutely get you fired.

I would say that the fact that he assaulted the cabbie after breaking the camera is enough to lose his job over. Keeping in mind he was taking a cab home from a work function; and the work function was paying for the cab ride.

How far do you go though? Should he never be hired ever again? End up pulling form society instead of contributing? Does he get a chance to make a second life?

Some people can do stupid stuff and redeem themselves. I think we need to be careful how far into ruining someone we go. This in no way excuses what he said though. But even murderers get a second chance.

This, everybody! He was effectively a representative of the company at the time. Of course he should be fired.

I remember the days when I was taught "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never break me." Being a minority, I've experienced so-called 'racism' but it's never held me from doing whatever I wanted.

I'm all for this dickbag getting fired but it seems these days it's "sticks and stones will break my bones but words... let's put some legislation around it." This concerns me.

Also, guy lost his job. Fine. Guy is now basically unemployable as his name and this incident is all over the place because people NEED to have this feeling of justice... or more accurately, vengeance. Punishment doesn't fit the "crime" here, IMO.

I wouldn't feel too bad if he lost his job for doing this regardless.

However, since he received the ride directly from a company party and he was using the company's taxi chit it's completely understandable that the company considers him a representative of the company at the time and as such considers this an appropriate response.
