[News] Ovechkin benched for sleeping in
Quote:
It turns out the personal reason that kept Alex Ovechkin out of Tuesday night’s game was oversleeping.
The Washington Capitals captain told reporters Wednesday that was benched by head coach Barry Trotz when he showed up late to Tuesday’s morning skate.
Ovechkin said he had accidentally programmed his alarm for 8:30 p.m. instead of 8:30 a.m.
“It was an honest mistake,” Trotz told reporters after Wednesday’s practice, which did include Ovechkin. “We have certain accountability rules.”

Classic mistake. At least it wasn't the separate volume knob. That one is really tricky!

Human garbage. Only the worst kind of human accidentally sleeps in.
Really though, it's Ovechkin. He's earned a bit of leeway, and it probably won't happen again.

I sure hope that the Capitals don't need those 2 points to make the playoffs at the end of the season... they sure could have used Ovi last night.

I don't think I would have suspended him unless this was a continuing issue.

Props to Trotz for doing the right thing as there's probably some coaches in this league that would have played him looking at the two points being more important than team locker room accountability.

Agreed, you can't set rules and expectations then not follow through cuz it was your top player.
Also, props to Ovie for taking his medicine. Shows he is a team player.

Good on Trotz even if it was an honest mistake on Ovie's part.
Too bad they got smoked by the Sharks

Well it looks like he took responsibility and didn't deflect blame like Ho Sang. Appears to be an honest mistake. I've certainly set my alarm incorrectly once or twice before.
I don't think anyone questions Ovechkin's drive or commitment. Although it's curious to scratch your superstar captain.

Barry Trotz just did everyone who had Martin Jones in their pool a big favour

Trotz has shown before that he isn't afraid to bring the hammer down for breaking team policy. Remember when he scratched Kostitsyn and Radulov in the middle of a playoff series for partying, even though they were down 2-0 in the series.

Agreed it was the right thing in Nashville. But that could have marked the beginning of the end for Trotz, no?
I do like the message it sent to the Caps. No one gets a free pass. Hopefully it doesn't hurt him more than just the potential 2 points.
