Would a world war fix this f***ed up world?
Talking to a retired military guy today he thinks it'll take a world war to reset society and sees no other way, when you look at it there seems to be nothing positive on a world scale happening.
- ISIS in the middle east
- Russia trying to take Ukraine and maybe more
- Saudi's screwing up oil prices
- Euro country's on the brink of bankruptcy
- Iran trying to build a bomb (to end Israel)
- mass shootings in the USA
It goes on and on, the world is truly crap
People have said for a few years now it would take WWIII to fix global economy but would it fix global ######ation as well.?
All I can say is thank ###### for hockey!

World war won't fix anything. Just more destabilization. And if it did fix anything, how long would it stay fixed for?

He sounds pretty worried, maybe he should turn off the news. Did you tell him how to get puppies?

Alien invasion. Or at least, staged alien invasion. Somebody get Ozymandias?

If either of the other world wars fixed anything, then I might believe a 3rd one would. But nothing was every fixed by those wars. Even some of the most recent wars (like the Balkan Wars) were directly related to punitive actions taken after WW1. After WW2, we have seen non-stop wars and weapons proliferation directly due to post-war ideology. Even the Iran nuclear situation can pretty much be traced back to problems caused by WW2. There really is no separation of these conflicts probably going back to at least the 1800s. It's just a constant evolution of humans fighting. The world pretty much is always at war, just the fronts change and things heat up and cool off sometimes.
Having said that, I do think we are due for something pretty big again soon.

The only thing anyone could reasonably predict about another world war is that a lot of people would die. Yes, it is possible those problems listed would disppear, but they would give way to an entirely new set of more serious problems. This concept of "resetting" sort of sounds like cutting the arm off at the shoulder to fix an infected finger.

Utter nonsense based entirely on fearmongering news organizations.
There has simply never been a better, safer, healthier, more affluent time to be alive in the history of the human race.
More people live under functioning democracies than ever in history. More people are living without the threat of violence from their own or other governments than ever before. More people have access to healthcare, education, and opportunity than ever before.
Minorities have better and more effective representation, women are more involved and have better access to public life, there is better awareness of and support for mental and emotional health, there are more national parks, more environmental organizations, more money being poured into 'green' technologies. There are more philanthropists doing more with more money.
More people are being fed on less land, science is developing new foods which require less care, water, pesticides, and energy to produce higher caloric content.
Prohibitionist laws are falling, barriers to full-participation in society are falling, ethnic self-determinism is on the rise, the number of religious people is falling, the number of people with college degrees is rising.
We just flew a probe past Pluto and found the most Earth-like planet yet outside our own Solar System.
The world is fine. Turn off your goddamn TV.

War would be disasterous now. It isn't 100 years ago sending millions to the trenches.
It would go nuclear really fast and we'd all be dead.

The problem is perception, as driveway is talking about our issue is that we now live in an interconnected world with instant media, instant communication and because of that our world seems more dangerous, more violent.
I don't think a world war could end in any other way than horribly because of MAD (Mutually assured destruction), mind you one of my favorite war books is Red Storm Rising which is about a war between the US and USSR, which no nukes are used because of the mutual destruction so it ends up being a normal standard war, but the destruction would be so much and again the EU would be devastated.
I think the age of world wars is over, we will have regional conflicts at most I think.

The amount of resources invested into the first world wars could have conceivably solved every problem in the world, from poverty to energy to the environment. Instead we let the ruling elite convince us to murder each other by the millions and bury our countries in debt to the international banks.
The barriers that seperate us: race, religion, culture are illusions devised by the ruling classes to convince us to hate each other, when in reality, all that the common folk in world desire is comfort, peace and stability. It is the money masters who are the true enemy of mankind, it is they who benefit from the wars, not us, never us.

I also believe that the number of people dying in armed conflict us the lowest it's been.
It's odd that you say Saudis screwing with oil prices because for the world economy that is a good thing and promotes growth. (Maybe not for the earth).
A war just increases debt and creates the next war. The result of Israel being created at the end of the Second World War has led to increased tensions. The punitive penalties on Germany after ww1 led to ww2. Ww2 split of Germany led to the Cold War and is tied to the current Russian militarism.
So even assuming we make it through a world war with a useable planet and city it really just sets the stage for the next one.
The biggest thing to fix the western world would be to somehow fix the political / media / cash / propaganda problem that we have and get leaders in power who are incentivized to do what's best for people instead of getting re-elected.
