Who Wears the "A" & "C" Next?
If we don't sign Giordano, Hudler, Wideman, who would you like to see wear the letter next? (Please don't say "we're not trading them etc, because this is just a discussion I wanna see who's next in line)

Monahan's the next captain. The A's are who they are.

I would imagine Monahan is a lock for next captain if the change comes early with Giordano being traded (hopefully doesn't happen).
If Gio signs a long term deal however, then who knows, anything could happen, we could draft or trade for a player who shows himself to be even more captain material than Monahan.
But if I were a betting man, Monahan will be our next captain whether it's next season or when Giordano retires.

Although the funny thing is, we put these absolute labels on players, (and by all accounts we're most likely right about Monahan), but none of us our actually in the room, for all we know Brodie might be a huge candidate for next captain but we just haven't seen anything as outsiders to lead us to give him that label on a message board.

I think Monny is going to be a leader for a long time, but I think Sam has the captain's edge

This is true. For all we know inside the room it's Bouma. Or Russell.
We say Monahan because he's Toews-like in his interviews. But for all we know he's not the type to stand up in the room.

I'm torn between Brodie, Monahan, and Bennett.

I would like to see Backlund as our next captain. He seems like a great leader, plus he's pretty humble and I like that quality in a captain

Russell as an assistant. not the sexy pick i guess but i don't believe leaders have to be your best players.

Not to derail the thread however the subject had me wondering. How much effect does having the "right" captain have on team success? You see teams who seem to pick the biggest star such as Pittsburgh, Washington etc. are these guys the real leaders? Or is Captaincy more of bestowing another accolade to elite players. I realize some other teams go with the heart and soul guys, but these are also often teams without a star or large amounts of success.

Bouma will have an A, maybe as soon as this season.

In almost all cases the "C" goes to one of, if not the, hardest working players on the team. The reason the majority of elite players reach that level is because they work so hard at their craft and why so many are named in leadership positions.

I see your point completely. However how many of us have worked with hard workers who once in leadership roles did not have the same results. If a guy spends more time in the gym and honing their skill more than everyone else I don't see how this will make them someone who can boost morale in the locker room, or be a mentor to younger players on the team based solely on being a hard worker.

Who's decision is it to name the Captain?
Obviously Hartley is involved but does he need to discuss it with Treliving first?

Not sure but I think Hartley as the one that named gio, Russell and Glencross. Depending on what happens with Russell I think it will likely be gio, hudler and Russell this year. Backlund, Wideman, Monahan, Bouma next in line. Lots to choose from I guess but you don't want all your letters given to D :-)

Bennett hasn't even officially made the team yet, little early for a letter.

If the Gio was not signed, which won't happen, i'd have to say that the C would have to go to Monahan, A for Bouma, A for Hamilton.
