If he doesn't take a big step this year he is likely gone from Edmonton.

This is perfect actually.
The Oilers are going to improve a little and ergo this is going to be their best season in a decade, so Schultzy is likely going to look good by association and get re-signed for big dollars and term after this.
Brilliant by the Schultz camp. The cap will likely go up a bit more next year and after their blockbuster upcoming season, I understand that McDavid is going to win them the cup in his inaugural season, or so I'm told by fans and media, and they'll want to keep the band together and he can maybe get his obligatory 6x6 bumped to a 7x7.

Does that make him a UFA at the end of this year? If he can ride the coattails of McSavior for one season he could end up with a long-term deal elsewhere.
Of course, the more likely scenario is that he continues to Oiler it up, in which case he's probably gone after this season anyways. Win-win scenario for him I guess...

I don't think Chia has the attachment to Schultz like MacT did.

Thought i'd post this for our general enjoyment here at CP
Comments from Mactavish when he signed shultz to a 1 year deal last year.
Quote:
“Untapped potential, incredible potential of this player. I feel like Justin is going to be a great player and a great Oiler. What we wanted to do as an organization is buy ourselves a little bit of time to give ourselves a chance to negotiate a long-term deal.
“He’s got a lot of confidence in his ability and was happy to take a short-term deal. Both sides chose not to go to arbitration, but we both agreed that wasn’t the right thing for a player we feel so strongly about, to put him through that divisive process. We had trouble agreeing on a number based on such a small sample size for Justin. We as an organization wanted a little more information, fully aware that information can be expensive. There’s a significant gap where the player is currently and where we expect him to be. Newport wasn’t going to undersell this player.
“Craig Ramsay will give him an experienced perspective on managing decisions, (while still) being aggressive.
“I disagree with the perception that he’s weaker on the defensive side of things. He showed me at the end of last year that he was managing the decisions on when to go, when to probe offensively, when to get back. I know he’s going to be a player that can be counted on in both ends. I think that Justin has Norris Trophy potential and I don’t think there are too many people who disagree with me in that regard… What Justin brings, everybody’s looking for, and we’re thankful we have him.”

He's kind of fell out of favor in the organization and with new management he's no longer protected by the good old boy scholarship program. Hard to imagine him taking a big step seeing he's not close to being a proper NHL defenseman but maybe with better coaching he can be salvaged as a bottom pairing guy that can play powerplay minutes.

And yet, he still gave him a 6% raise.

Is that a QO stipulation? Could they have offered less and retained his rights?

I think that was just a standard Qualifying Offer.
Honestly, I'm surprised he took it. Granted an arbitration hearing is unlikely to go in his favour. Dude is terribad. And I'm not sure hes still eligible for arbitration.

Lol, how much money has he scammed off the Oilers so far? He must have made around $20M off of them, or close to it. Not bad for an AHL calibre dman ha ha.

Nope. His salary last season was over $1 million, so his QO was 100% of last year's salary. Chia Head gave him a 6% raise.
I can't imagine that they were worried about an arbitration award that would have been more than $3.9 million.

This was really the best-case scenario for the Oilers as far as Schultz goes.
