Thoughts??

Really the only thing that makes sense is to trade Hiller during the preseason and play Ramo Ortio.
Gillies should spend the year playing in Stockton.

He could given
- there seems to be more goalies than nhl jobs
- teams are reluctant to claim unproven goalies. Markstrom cleared last year

One of Hiller/Ramo traded or sent to the AHL. The other guy plays with Ortio in the NHL.

Let Hiller and Ramo battle it out for the NHL job. I don't think its a bad thing to have 3 NHL ready goaltenders on the roster.
It'll be good for Gillies to have some quality competition in the AHL with Ortio. Good for the rest of the prospects too to have solid goaltending backing them up.
It's not like Ramo/Hiller will bring us top assets in the trade market so I don't see any point moving them.

Also if he doesn't play well enough to beat out one of Hiller or Ramo, other teams won't be anxious to take and keep him.

No way do we carry 3 goalies. Both Hartley and Treliving reiterated that there is no point to it.
Highly doubt that Ortio goes to the AHL again. He has gained high praise from the pros and it will be better off transitioning his game to the next level and let Gillies develop in the AHL where Ortio can't interfere. With out acquisition of resigning Ramo, it only makes sense to move Hiller.

I have always had the feeling Ortio is going to breakout as a true starting No. 1 goalie.
I think whatever happens to start the season with 3, Orts will be the consistant starter by Christmas. Just a gut feeling.

Hopefully we get a 1st or a low 2nd for Hiller.

Difference between Markstrom and Ortio is that Markstrom has repeatedly shown he can't translate his game to the NHL level before and after getting waived. Wheres Ortio has performed better.
Regardless, If Ortio performs in the training camp he won't be seeing waivers if he doesn't he can be forgotten about.

All 3 go to camp....the top 2 stay and the odd man out gets sent to Stockton.
Simple.

We risk losing a proven goalie (applies to both Ramo and Hiller) for nothing when we could trade for at least something. No way they send Hiller to the A.

Basically this. I think Treliving has prepared himself for all three situations should any one of Ramo, Hiller, or Ortio be outperformed by the other two. But as it will be assessed over training camp, he'll sit on his hands and observe til then.
Right now I still think Hiller has the better trade value. Proven starter, decent stats. As Flames fans, we can get pretty divided over Hiller/Ramo but potential trade partners wouldn't. But I still don't think trade will be an option unless another team's starter goes down to injury.
What I think will happen is Ramo and Hiller are still the best two goalies at camp, prompting Treliving to put Ortio on waivers. We'd go with Ramo/Hiller on NHL and Ortio/Gillies in AHL until the trade deadline, when Ortio gets the callup.

There is lots of time to trade Hiller before camp but if it ends up being as you say, it will be interesting to see if we sign a AHL tweener vet to play in Stockton. If we don't, your plan is probably correct. If we do, Gillies could still end up in Adirondack which isn't bad for a rookie goalie. Lots of possibilities.

Ramo or Hiller may be more likely to pass thru waivers than even Ortio. Not many teams can afford the cap space to claim $3.8 to 4.5M back up goalie off waivers

As it's already been mentioned, let them battle it out in training camp and if Ortio proves he's ready deal Ramo or Hiller depending on who plays better. I don't see why Ramo should automatically be omitted from being dealt just because he re-signed.

Pretty unlikely any of those guys gets claimed at that time of year. Every team already has their allocation of G's and where they are going to play, so unless there are injuries in the equation on another squad, not many clubs will be wanting to grab a guy before the season starts that they have to keep for the whole year. Particularly a guy making 4.5 a year if it is indeed Hiller.
However, even in the event one does get claimed, it wont be the end of the world with what is coming down the pipe.
