In talks that went down to the wire, the Sabres finally managed to come to terms with Joe Thornton.
GM Eldrick: It was always our goal to have Joe back in blue. Our commitment to improving our on ice product finally convinced Joe to sign. We're thrilled to have our on ice leader back.

Thornton likely left a few dollars on the table. It was expected Thornton would be looking for to move to a team more likely to win it all, but the salary cap probably would have prevented those teams from making offers regardless.

As per team policy, financial details were not announced.

Would make sense that thronton would sign in the east and stay in buffalo, odds are he would be getting only interest for the west as they are depleted of talent. That alone would have driven him to leave large amounts of dollars on the table

We should really start thinking about splitting our league into two separate leagues... The Elite League made up of the east and The Other League made up of teams from the west
