Sound identification
One of our local radio stations is hosting a weekly treasure hunt and this is one of the clues:
https://soundcloud.com/100-1-moose-fm-live/week-5-clue
Does anyone have a clue what it could be?

Oh, these young'uns are so cute.
That sounds like a dial telephone to me. I hated waiting for the dial to turn, but I did love the sound

I think you guys are right. I've used rotary phones before but none that sounded that rough. Going to check the Rotary Club and a couple other places. Pretty sure we have no rotary phones on display

That's 100% a rotary phone. The length of the noises changes every time because the operator is dialing different numbers. The higher the number, the longer the dial has to rotate back to the starting position. Hell, he even hangs up the receiver at the end and it dings.
It's not a dot matrix printer or typewriter or anything like that. Those sound sound much slower and have a different pitch. Source: used a typewriter yesterday.

Hack beat me to it but ya you can tell it is a rotary based on the length of the noise each time. Also that slight 'thud' when it reaches the backwards position.

You could probably tell the phone number by how long it dials through.... might match up with the phone number of whereever you are supposed to go.

I think it sounds like one of those old accounting machines, a calculator with the paper reel on.

Checked the Rotary Club, the Rotary Spray Park and the Rotary Skate Park, nothing. Checking the Rotary RV park 10 minutes out of town.
There are no public rotary phones in town

Sound identification
I don't think there is enough time between each of those sounds to go through the dialing motion with your finger. That's why I would discount it as a rotary phone. The pause seems too consistent, which is why I would vote for a printer of some kind printing different lengths of lines.

Rotary phones did not all rotate at the same speed. You could dial a number while making it spin faster, or slower, it would still dial correctly. There are a few other hacks as well for those old phones. You could also dial each number using any number, as long as you made it 'click' enough times (iirc).
With that said, if the sound is from a fairly standard rotary, than you probably could guess the number that was dialed, dial it and see what the answer is.

Now that you mention it, kind of reminds me of the intro to Pink Floyd's, "Money".

So the second clue was an alarm clock. Someone found the prize on a sundial outside the school district building. The prize was two plane tickets to anywhere WestJet flies in Canada
