Joe "Frickin" Colborne

Felt that it's finally time for Joe to have a 'frickin' thread.
I know he hasn't impressed everyone yet, but he sure as heck impressed me. I had high hopes for Joe when I heard we acquired him - tonight and last game he just lit up like a flare.
We paid a conditional 4th for him. A conditional 4th for a giant of a kid who will play a very strong power game. He fits an organizational need for strength on the wing even if he's a lefty. A measly 4th for a former 1st round ( 16th overall wat?) by the Bruins. Clearly they saw something in him. Big kid. Soft hands too.
We won the balls out of the trade with Toronto as far as I'm concerned. Great seeing his play lately and I hope we keep him. He's improved a heck of a lot since the beginning of the season.
He needs to do leg days with Gary Roberts. No one's pushing this guy off the puck once he packs the muscle on and adjusts to his size.

My favorite part of that trade was when the Leafs lost all thier Centers within a week of trading Colburne

I was extra iffy on him joining Calgary with all the "hockey politics" that so many have spoke of. I also didnt believe he would become much more than he was.
That said, I couldnt be happier that I am wrong as he gets better and better every single game. Outside of Money, he has had the greatest improvements in his game and makes smart plays which are now coming full circle and turning into points!
It is interesting as he would have been buried on so many other teams and I am not sure his game would be as good in the minors. Our rebuild has allowed us to give these guys a shot and he has made the most of it.
Good on him and hope to see him continue to climb up the ranks.

Not sure what his ceiling is but he does have good hands and seems to be getting better as the season progresses. We have to remember this is his first season in the NHL and when you look at where he is today compared to when when he first came here you can definitely see significant improvement and if he continues to get better it can only help this rebuild. All in all not a bad pickup for a 4th round pick.

I think he could be a good 3rd line centre that can fill in 2nd spot duty with injuries, etc

Truth be told I'm favoring him on the wing as of late. Point explosion.

Johnny Hockey will likely have to start in the NHL with a big center and he may fit the bill.

On the flip side there is an argument for keeping him on the wing as he may be able to play top 6 rather than 3rd line.

I really like Colborne. I'm not sure he'll ever live up to the hype he was given as a Leaf (who does?), but I love the hands and his ability to play when he's alone. I keep calling him the inverse of Lombardi, but I still feel it's apt: when Colborne is left alone, he is money as oppose to CP's nicknamed "Handless horseman". His shootouts and some two on one plays (or occasionally when he's pestered by a useless defenceman) are great. He just needs to develop his play in traffic and fighting. Tonight, the Islanders comeback game for when we all forget which night I'm referring to, felt like a large step forward in that regard. He made beautiful tips in front of the net and his first goal was a top corner snipe just a few feet out.
At a 4th, he already was a win for the Flames. If he keeps improving, it'll be an amazing steal.

if he keeps improving, he is going to cost us a third, the 4th rounder was conditional on him not scoring 10 or more

it was conditional on the Flames making the playoffs and (not or) he scores 10 goals or 35 points

Given tonight's events and Joe's season, this is probably a good time to share this:

Nah, its "if Colborne scores 10 goals or 35 points in the 2013-14 regular season and Calgary qualifies for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs."
We're safe!

His game is much better suited to the wing, been saying it since he arrived. He isn't good enough to be an NHL centre but glad to see Hartley moved him to the wing. I like his big body presence as a winger much more.

Well in that case let's make him the player of the month. I just hate giving Toronto anything more than the bare minimum

I like trades like this during the rebuild - using the picks to build a team with players in their 20s to add to the NHL team whilst still bringing in guys in their teens to grow into bigger roles. 2 of these trades (Colborne, Russell) are looking good now, too early on Knight, just Galiardi that would go down as a miss.
I also like that he is playing well on the wing. With guys like Colborne, Granlund, Knight, Reinhart, not all of them can be the 3rd and 4th line centres, but if they can play 3rd line wing, with spot duty on the 2nd line, that really adds to the lineup, and gives the team the versatility to weather injury crises

Probably a dumb question but if Colborne doesn't meet the conditions the Leafs get nothing?
Also, Yes I like Joe Colborne.

Huge fan! I see a consistent banging-them-home around the net, 20 goal scorer and shoot-out master emerging. Also seems like a nice dude. Terrific goal celebration. Go Joe.

They get the Flames' fourth round pick in this year's Draft if the conditions aren't met. It becomes a third rounder if the conditions are met (which they won't be).

The Leafs get a fourth, if the conditions were met it would have been upped to a third.
