Bomb detonates at Winnipeg Family Law Office: Woman in Critical Condition
A lawyer was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after an explosion at a law office at 252 River Ave. in Winnipeg Friday morning. Police confirmed 35-year-old Maria Mitousis, a lawyer with the Petersen King law office, sustained injuries to her neck and stomach when an explosive device in a package detonated. Mitousis was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police are investigating after an "explosive device was detonated," sending a woman at Petersen King Law firm on River Avenue to hospital with serious injuries to her upper body. A downtown building in the 400 block of St. Mary Ave., which houses several law firms, was evacuated in the early afternoon. Barry Gorlick, Mitousis' romantic partner, briefly spoke with the Free Press and said she went into surgery just before 1:30 p.m.
"It's not good," Gorlick said.
A downtown building in the 400 block of St. Mary Ave. — which houses Monk Goodwin law offices — was evacuated in the early afternoon. Mitousis, who specializes in family law, previously worked at Monk Goodwin, a law firm in the building on St. Mary Avenue which was also evacuated. She only recently moved to Petersen King, where the explosion occurred.
This is where the story gets bizarre. The woman's boyfriend was recently disbarred after 35 years of Family Law practice, after he was found to have commited at least 15 counts of malpratice. He was stealing literally milllions from his clients:
I know exactly where both of those places are. I feel horrible for the woman. The St.Mary's Ave building is a high rise, is it not?
Yup. Not sure what's there now, but there used to be a TD on the main floor, a Pony Corral on the main floor and a breakfast/lunch place called Jack Sprats on the 2nd floor. (I used to work across the street from there, but that was 16 years ago, so I assume things have changed!)
"A Winnipeg man allegedly compiled a list of people he felt had wronged him in life — including a local lawyer who was injured in a targeted bomb attack last week, the Free Press has learned.
Now the 49-year-old accused is in custody following an around-the-clock police investigation that sources say likely prevented further violence.
"This is good work by police to track him so quickly. There could have been so much more blood shed," a justice source familiar with the investigation told the Free Press on Sunday. "There was a long list of people with grievances and a plan to 'take care of them.'"
Good job by Police in tracking the guy down. Another explosive device was detonated, and there have been reports of up to 20 suspicious packages sent. Luckily he was caught before he did any further damage.

Nothing changes except the red lights.

I feel the authorities aren't given enough credit for the great work they do on a daily basis. You get a couple of stories involving a few bad apples that seem to generate all the news but the fact of the matter is that these people who are all imperfect humans just like us do an excellent job keeping citizens as safe as possible from crime.
