Default Fatal shooting in Cottonwood Walmart

I havent seen any discussion on this but it total chaos. The police seemed to have a lot of restraint but they didnt have any of them detained with cuffs. This one will be used in training videos for sure.

The first thing that comes to mind when I see a video like this: these guys don't make enough money.

I'm sure that somehow, people will be saying this was all the police's fault.

What the hell... that is terrifying! And disturbing!!! So sad... oh wow... I might not sleep for awhile now...

Maybe there should be a warning attached to this video. Geez!

I strongly suggest folks not watch if they're at all sensitive to anything at all graphic.

That is beyond chaos. OMG. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now know why I'm not in law enforcement -- or emergency medical services!

And without analyzing it too closely, I tip my hat to the officers on scene at this brutal scene. It would be difficult to realistically show much more restraint than that.

It's amazing they only killed one. They could have lit them all up and it would have been justified.

The more you look the crazier it gets. @ 3:40 the cop on the ground trys to shoot on person and it misfires , he racks the gun again it it misfires. the person could of been killed right there!

You weren't kidding. That was absolute chaos. That fact that they only shot at one guy is incredible restraint.

While I have sympathy for the cops in this crazy situation, I think more training for them may have helped the situation.

I had to look up where Cottonwood is. I guess it's north of Phoenix Arizona.

Pretty much. All the police wanted to do was separate them to get statements - they weren't even arresting anyone or attempting to. Those people deserve anything they got, IMO.

This is a situation where officers involved should have backed off immediately when it became clear they did not have the manpower/ability to properly subdue the Garvers with the officers at the scene. The officers on-scene are tremendously lucky this did not end up much worse for them given their inability to cuff those involved.

As Vulcan said, there is a disturbing lack of tactics displayed by the officers in this video. Hopefully it is an eye opener for this department to address their officer safety training.

Very disturbing. There is something wrong about having these incidents viewable by the whole world without any commentary, preparation or explanation. Makes the police work more and more stressful, I think.

So many questions about this one though: can anyone make sense of wtf was going on there? why did the two guys continue fighting each other in front of the police? why did the officers not use special fighting techniques to subdue these people, aren't they trained? and lastly: why do they not shoot those idiots in the leg???

K... backstory is that it's a crazy nutjob family from Idaho, all explained in the news here, here, here, here. To answer CaptainYooh's question about why they don't shoot in the leg.... that's because shooting to wound is no good, as explained here.

Pretty much, though in case anyone was unsure after reading the above links, the guy was wrestling with the cop for his gun and was winning, shooting him in the leg. The guy was then dispatched by the other officer.

The family in the video are drifters and are part of a family band. They wander all over and play. Their band name is Matthew 24 Now (refers to a biblical passage regarding the end times). They had apparently been camping out in the parking lot of that Walmart for a few days. They went into the Walmart to use the washrooms, and there was a confrontation between them and an employee, which apparently got physical and the police were called. By the time they arrived, the family was all in the parking lot.

Wounded officer expected to make full recovery. Bystanders who helped police in the brawl (one of whom took some serious punches) were recognized by police for their efforts.
