Mike Richards, Parenteau and Fistric on waivers for buyout purposes
James Mirtle @mirtle
Kings place Mike Richards on waivers (buyout).
Perhaps the biggest blunder of Lombardi's tenure as GM was not buying him out last year
James Mirtle @mirtle
Parenteau and Fistric also on waivers.

Thank goodness Lombardi didn't use a compliance buy out on him. Nice to have a bit of an anchor holding back the Kings.

Parenteau might be an option worth considering on RW. His production has gradually declined, but he has plenty of skill if used in the right game situations.

What I think is interesting is the way that the cap hit for Richards will hit the Kings.
It will progress like this: $1.2m, $1.7m, $2.7m, $4.2m, $4.2m, then $1.5m for five more years. (according to General Fanager)
It is clearly a good cap move for the next two years. Mediocre, but still probably positive for a third year. But a big honking anchor for 2018-19 & 2019-20. It almost looks like they are pre-planning a rebuild around then. Given all of their top forwards will be in significant decline by then, it might be a reasonable approach. If the rebuild is successful, this cap hit will be trailing off as they are starting to be competitive again.
Obviously, it would have been much better to use a compliance buyout or just not have this horrid contract in the first place. But this is not that bad if you think their cup window is only 2-3 years.

So glad LA refused to use a compliance buyout on Richards and are forced to use a normal one now:

so once Richards is bought out, who signs him and for how much?
The guy can still play, but isn't a $5.75 cap hit.
2 year contract at 3 Mill per? I can see a lot of teams looking at that.

I can see him signing a cheap one year deal like Brad Richards did to show he's not washed up.

Do those Richards buyouts include recapture penalties?

Some of the backstory last year, where Lombardi went to visit Richards and asked him about his commitment:
Lombardi had one last golden chance to initiate a compliance buyout - free and clear of cap penalty. But he decided to take Richards at his word.
"I met with him. He promised that he'd do it. And when a guy looks you in the eye and promises, to me, that goes beyond loyalty," Lombardi told the Los Angeles Times before last season. "A guy's giving you his word. That's more important than a contract or anything else."
....
"It could be the worst decision I ever made," Lombardi told ESPN.com last month. "But for all the right reasons. In a cap world, you can't have any heart and soul. I struggle with that."

The buyout will supercede recapture.

Wow, the Richards buy out is crazy, definitely one of the biggest NHL blunders of all time not using a compliance buy out.
Like frogger said it definitely looks like they are going for it over the next two seasons and then will need a major rebuild. As a Flames fan it makes me very happy to see LA's cup window closing.

Retool yes, but with guys like Kopitar, Quick and Doughty I doubt you'll see them rebuild.

I'd take parenteau on a 1 yr show me deal at 2 mil. Worst case he sits in the minors all season. We need a number 2 right winger and this looks pretty good as there wouldn't be a long term commitment. Between him and Jones you get 1 healthy right winger.

Wow, Parenteau was awesome from 2010-2012 and then just fell off a cliff. What happened to him?
