US government accuses China of largest breach ever of govt. computer networks
http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/04/politi...ent/index.html
Quote:
Four million current and former federal employees may have had their personal information hacked, the Office of Personnel Management said on Thursday.
The agency, which is conducts background checks, warned it was urging potential victims to monitor their financial statements and obtain new credit reports.
U.S. officials believe this could be the biggest breach ever of the government's computer networks.
The breach is beyond the Office of Personnel Management and Department of Interior, with nearly every federal government agency hit by the hackers, government officials said.
An assessment continues and it is possible millions more government employees may be impacted.
American investigators believe they can trace the breach to the Chinese government. Hackers working for the Chinese military are believed to be compiling a massive database of Americans, intelligence officials told CNN on Thursday night.

I predicted this 5 months ago, this exact same thing. With the current fervor in culture about cyber security it was clear there would be a China/US cyber conflict soon.

Because I wasn't the only one predicting it most likely. In January the media was absolutely saturated with information about cyber security and US/China cyber attacks that it just seemed obvious a major cyber attack would happen or atleast that one would be in the news.

I don't think we should be celebrating this.
China is much worse than the USA.

When talking about government espionage, quite unlikely. It's the internet equivalent of al-Qaeda vs. ISIS.

I feel for the thousands of people that had their personal information stolen, regardless if the US government are a bunch of dicks or not. Whatever your personal politics are, I think China would be more likely to sell the info to a nefarious third party (someone who would steal actual money from the victims) than the US would ever be. Plenty of innocent people just got mixed into this and people are basically laughing about it.

What does this even mean? 4m+ people just had their personal information stolen and possibly millions more, and you're going off on the US government's morality as if any of these 4m people can do a damn thing about it. Stealing government secrets would be one thing, but this is probably some scheme to steal money/sell opportunity than it is anything else.
Not sure why China should be applauded, they're one of the worst governments on the planet, they should receive vitriol and derision from everyone and never be given the benefit of the doubt in virtually any situation. I hate the US government as much as most do, but they are definitely the lesser of the evils when compared to most of the rest of the world, especially places like China.

It's sarcastic irony. You know, referencing the oft-heard law enforcement meme that if you don't have anything illegal to hide, why are you concerned about your privacy?
