Sportsnet now no.1 sports broadcaster in Canada
Did not see this posted anywhere.
Excerpt: Congratulations are in order for Sportsnet, which confirmed itself as the No. 1 sports broadcaster in Canada.Sportsnet has been around for 17 years, the first 16 of them No. 2 to the powerhouse TSN.
But the last year was a banner year for Sportsnet, powered by Rogers' $5.2 billion deal to become the NHL's exclusive national broadcaster in Canada. TSN and CBC (which nowadays only carries Rogers hockey broadcasts in its channels) lost national rights.
TSN still has regional rights to some teams, including the Maple Leafs.
Sportsnet's share of a Canadian TV audience was 3.9; TSN's 3.7.

No surprise there but really disappointing, as their production is terrible

Still a second rate bush league channel in my opinion. They just threw a pile of money in a desperate attempt to stay relevant. I hope Rogers goes bankrupt. Dirt bag of a company.

They literally bought that title but I can understand given they could ever attain it on merit given their shoddy presentation. Even with HNIC and the NHL there's just something about their presentation that screams "inferior".

Now if only they could splurge for some real HD equipment to broadcast Flames games in.

And the other parts of Rogers media are getting decimated as a by-product.

So despite pretty much owning all of hockey in Canada, they only beat out TSN by a margin of 0.2?
Impressive what a near monopoly on the hockey market in Canada can buy you.

I can only go by what I see on GCL. I used to dread SNW coverage, so ended up more often than not watching the away team feed.
This season, I've really enjoyed the coverage on SNW. Hopefully it continues to improve.

From my perspective over the pond, CBC's production of HNIC was viewed as classy, must see Saturday night TV. The new sportsnet production is anything but. When I'd watch HNIC over the years that programme would be a credit to your fine country (despite Don Cherry's comedic ramblings). Now I watch HNIC and view it as just another sports show. I tend to look forward to Hometown Hockey on Sundays instead now, one of the few things Rogers seem to have got moderately right.

Not only owning the national rights and regional for four teams, but also holding the Jays, who are at or near the top of MLB for viewership. Even so, a good Jays team and a bad Raptors team would give Sportsnet a far larger gap.

Why are the Stanley Cup Final games on CBC and not Sportsnet? Does CBC have a wider reach?

They might technically be #1 now but TSN will always be the undisputed best to me.

Well with the Raptors a bad team is always a possibility but the likelihood of the Jays being good are probably trending below the Oilers now. Since they last one the AL East in the early 90's every other team in the division has won the pennant except the Jays. They aren't the Pirates or Cubs but they are a perennial failure and as of now the picture isn't exactly rosy although the rest of the division isn't lights out.

Personally I liked what Sportsnet provided last year. Lots of variety, could change a channel and watch others games.
I would expect the 1st year was really difficult, Sportsnet will only get better.
Sportsnet ratings will increase as well.....

Could Care Less

I'm just happy we have real local broadcasters now. Makes a huge difference to our viewing experience. Now if they could just synch the audio with the feed....could be a room full of monkeys running the technical side for all I know.

"Top" as in most watched because you have no choice. It's like congratulating your internet provider.

Yeah, having a borderline Monopoly will do that.
