Default Un-install Hola ASAP.

Hey gents,

I have seen a lot of posters on here talking about using HOLA.

I thought I would share this article with you guys in case you guys are still using it.

Basically you are putting a back door into your computer when you use it.

First sentence on the hola website states it's a peer to peer service. Not much of a story

That is the story. On Thursday, the site didn't say that: http://web.archive.org/web/201505281...tp://hola.org/

To me it's not that it's peer to peer, it's that they were using the peer-to-peer network's resources elsewhere, so peers don't just help other peers, they help another company owned by Hola that sells those resources.

Which is fine as long as they are up-front about what's going on, but they weren't.

I'm not a sophisticated user in respect to peer to peer sites as I don't download movies etc. so I was surprised at how Hola works as I just never thought much about it. I tried using it for a while but it seemed to interfere with my browsing so I uninstalled it a while ago.
This is probably overblown but still who wants to be involved in this crap.

By becoming an exit node for a Tor-like network, Hola users are exposed to the same risks that Tor exit nodes operators are. Their connection can be abused by someone else, by trafficking in child pornography or downloading illegal material, for example. To police authorities, it would look like the innocent Hola user was responsible for those actions, since his or her IP address would be associated with them.

Hmmmm. I've got the Hola extension installed in Chrome at work so I can tune to Pandora when I stream and have Hola on my phone to stream Pandora in my Jeep sometimes as well.

We pay for and use Un-Block Us at home, but Hola was the easiest to use (free) alternative for work and my phone. Not sure what else I would use if I got rid of Hola, but I certainly don't want to be associated with child pornography or anything like that.

Not sure what to do now.

I use Proxmate as a chrome extension, works with Netflix, Pandora etc. No idea if it works any differently than Hola.

I have Hola running on an old Nexus that basically has Hola/Pandora and that's it.

If you aren't paying for something, you aren't the customer. You are the product.

I pay $80 a year to Hide My Ass, which gives me access to the full-blown VPN program (with hundreds of world wide VPN servers), an Android app, and the HMA Chrome-proxy plugin. They all work from the same account.

I use cloudnymous rates are different depending on which server you join from $0.15 per day to $4.95 per month. I just buy a block of credit and use the daily option.

Tried Proxymate here at work in Chrome. Couldn't get anything to load. Think I'll give up and just use Slacker at work. I do like Pandora on my LG G3 in the car though. Has anyone tried this one? I don't want to ditch Hola for something else that works pretty much the same way.

We pay $4.99 a month for Un-Block Us at home so home is no issue. Just need something when I'm not on Wifi out and about in the car to listen to Pandora.

Do you find HMA painfully slow? I can never seem to get a decent server.

Try zenmate. However, it may have the same issues as Hola.

I've played around with a few over the years, and while HMA isn't the fastest (usually tops out at ~15 Mbps), it's still fast enough for SuperHD and most other uses. Pure VPNs are never all that fast mind you (when compared to a proxy).

I've stuck around because of the other apps/extensions and the extremely reliable connectivity.

Yeah half the time I'm barely getting a SD feed that doesn't stop to buffer every 30 seconds.

That's really odd. Which servers are you connecting to? I typically connect to the Billings, Montana server, which a few months ago was pretty slow but is now on-par with the Seattle server, and is more stable to boot.
