Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the Canucks have acquired Brandon Sutter and a 3rd round pick from Pittsburgh in exchange for Nick Bonino, Adam Clendening and a 2nd round pick in 2016. The 3rd round selection acquired by Vancouver will be the earlier of the two held by Pittsburgh.

Not sure about the trade. I guess the Canucks upgrade on Bonino with a more western conference type centre. I thought Clendenning was supposed to be a good young Dman?

Sutter and Bonino are likely a wash (Not much age difference there and Bonino actually has put up more points in a tougher western conference).

And the Canucks added to get Sutter.

Kind of a lateral move but Sutter is a better player than Bonino at both ends of the ice. Just goes to show how low they sold on Kesler. I see Benning's gone to the Darryl Sutter school of using 2nd round picks as a main currency resource.

so they trade him away, plus a 2nd round pick, and another d prospect (former 2nd round pick).

i suppose the 2nd/3rd round pick swap is essentially moving down ~5-15 spots in the draft, but still.

Sutter's a solid player, but is he not essentially a 3rd line C? He's avg'd a 0.37 PPG at the NHL level (in close to 500 NHL games). Backlund, as a comparison, avg'd a 0.43 PPG over close to 300 games (both are 26 years old).

so the "re-tool" continues for the canucks, at the expense of 2nd round picks

Bad trade for the Canucks.

Brandon Sutter and Bonino is pretty much a wash. They are both 2b/3rd line C who can get you 30-40 points a year. Even the age difference is only about a year with Brandon being younger. They pretty much traded Clendening + 2nd for a 3rd which is terrible because that second round pick could be in the high 30s.

Likely a bigger move than that? Vancouver probably finishes worse than Pittsburgh, so they more likely move a whole 30+ picks down.

Sutter is a good 2-way center but his point totals have always been a bit underwhelming. 3.3M salary/cap hit this year and is a UFA next summer. He could potentially get some value back if the Canucks are sellers at this years deadline.

Yeah it looks good at first because Sutter still carries that "high pick hype" but really he hasn't produced much at the NHL level.

Better defensively then Bonino but offensively it is a wash and isn't much of an upgrade IMO.

Sutter is also UFA at the end of this contract (Making $3.3 million), while Bonino has 2 years remaining making a reasonable $1.9 million.

I guess it's kind of official now that the return for Kesler was pretty awful as Bonino was supposed to be the key piece with the first round pick. Now all they have to show for Kesler a year later is a bad defenseman signed to a terrible contract, 3rd line center and a B (a high B albeit) level prospect.

For what it's worth I'd take Sutter over Bonino. Sutter just seems to me like a hard working chap, whereas Bonino is ok with being a peripheral guy. Neither guy is spectacular, but between the two, I would take Sutter. And he's younger so there is that.

Per Pens, the 2nd rounder they received was originally Anaheim's. The 3rd rounder they sent was originally Buffalo's (Bylsma compensation).

So likely only moving back less than 10 spots.

The 2nd rounder was the one acquired in the Bieksa trade.

I'd imagine the emergence of Horvat in the latter part of the season and playoffs made Bonino expandable. Horvat likely gets a shot at 2nd line C, with Sutter remaining the 3rd line C. I'd much rather have Sutter than Bonino on my team. I think it's a good trade for Vancouver, although the loss of a 2nd and Clendening will sting. Most fans I've spoken to thought Clendening had a good shot of making it this year.

if Horvat being pencilled in as a 2nd line C, then why trade who he's replacing (plus pick+prospect) to get your 3rd line C?
