What would it take?
Im looking at Chicago and their cap issues heading into next season and given they have only $7m to sign 12 players (4 RFAs). Sharp has always been the talk of the man to leave town but he isn't what the Flames are looking for.
So my question is what would it take for the flames to trade and sign(in whichever order) Brandon Saad and are we interested...Chicago likely can't or doesn't want to afford him.
I realize we have an abundance of left shooting left wingers but this is a player that could stay with the team for many years and is on an upswing that seems to be endless. He's responsible in both ends and has the potential for 30/30.
Given our 3 2nd rounders do we make an offer?

I'd package picks for Saad in a heartbeat.

With how deep this draft is, we could get a Saad calibre player at each of 45, 52, and 53. It is nuts.
I would only deal from our current prospect pool for a guy like that. We do have enough quality prospects that we could make a deal that would work for both sides.

They will be wanting our first for Saad.
I could see Buffalo giving them 21 easily for Saad, maybe even willing to add to that.
Flyers probably offer the lightning's as part of their package as they need young LWers too

disagree with your premise. Saad is precisely the age and likely bridge contract that the Hawks need to sign and keep.

teams with cap pressure will not resort to trading their young stars to us. It's a waste of time and energy to even consider such a scenario. They will buy out veterans before they even consider looking to trade young and upcoming stars.

This was an article in the Chicago newspaper a few days ago:
http://chicago.suntimes.com/blackhaw...ks-willing-pay
Bowman said Saad will be re-signed. Chicago will move or let other players go before Saad. He's part of the long term future in Chicago. He's a heck of a player. Only 22 years old, has blazing speed and is a good 2nd line player. Teams would offer up a 1st for him for sure. He's worth it. Chicago won't let him go though. Guys like Patrick Sharp will be made available first.

Saad is pretty darn good. I don't think we'll find a Saad in the 2nd round even in this draft.
I'd package those 2nd's for Saad, but like sureloss said, Hawks would definitely want our first ++ for Saad.

Saad was 43rd overall wasn't he.

I wouldn't mind the Flames taking a look at Sharp. I realize we have depth at LW but I believe he has played all 3 forward positions in the past. Also if sharp had to play on the left side I'm sure someone else could convert to RW.
Heavy shot, physical guy and a quick skater. He would fit in great,

Something like Stralman, Colin Stuart and Matt DeBlouw ought to get it done.....we can even through in Wayne Primeau for them.....

Buy Sharp for cheap.
Would Chicago even be able to say no to a deal like Raymond (50%) + 2016 3rd for Sharp? Surely they couldn't say no to us saving them 4.325m each year and a 3rd round pick.
Sharp is a significant upgrade to Raymond and should really be considered looking at since he only has 2 years left on his contract.

Sadly Darren Haynes tweeted last night that Saad was taken with the 43rd pick that year which originally belonged to the Flames. Flames traded it to Toronto for Stralman and it eventually came to Chicago. That's not to say the Flames would have definitely picked Saad if they still held the pick but it would've been possible. I'm not a Sutter basher by any means but the guy sure undervalued second round picks.
To make matters worse they traded Stralman shortly afterward for a third round pick which was used to pick Max Reinhart.

To be fair that 2nd rounder was moved to get rid of Primeau's cap hit, it wasn't traded for Stralman per se.
Also Stralman apparently had serious health issues that were holding him back. Until the Rangers finally diagnosed it properly, he was struggling to stay on the ice.

I agree Sharp could come cheap but not that cheap. Other teams can easily outbid that offer. Sharp likely costs a 2nd and a player like Reinhart so basically Chicago absorbs absolutely no cap

This is an excellent trade, can't see why the Flames wouldn't jump on this. Oh wait, because there's 30 teams in the NHL.
I get it, teams get into cap crunches and have to ditch salary, but something that seems to get lost on fans is that while a team may be desperate to ditch salary, the player they dangle is still open to any GM's in the league.
So while they're in a race against time to make a move, there's still X number of GM's in competition for the player dangled, and Sharp would certainly fall under the hot commodity category.
Chicago isn't going to look at Raymond and a 3rd, lol. Their GM could tell Treliving "Hang on, I'll phone you right back" *phone rings "Hey Brad, yeah it took me two minutes to find five teams to throw out better offers, but thanks for your interest".

They will move Sharp, Bickell, and Versteeg first. The best player for Chicago we can hope becomes available is Shaw

No. He's 33. Stay the course.
