Default Local Music Stores

Hello CP, I realize Calgary isn't a city with a huge music scene, but I was wondering if anyone here knows of any store in the city that sells records by local artists and bands, well-known or not? I'd like to get to know the local scene a bit better.

Two places I could think of.

Heritage Posters and Music, on 15th St and 11th Ave SW
http://www.heritagepostersandmusic.com/
I remember these guys have a pretty decent local music section last time I was there (couple years ago)

Sloth Records, on 17th Ave
https://slothrecords.wordpress.com/
much smaller than Heritage, but I think they had a little local section.

Luke's Drug Mart (Bridgeland location) and Hot Wax have a bin or half a bin of local artists on vinyl. It's vinyl though so you miss out on a lot of Calgary bands that don't press to vinyl. I don't remember seeing a local section at Sloth but I find local band records from over the years there from time to time as people sell old stuff.

Sloth has a small local section next to the check-out counter. They also regularly get used gems for Western Canadian and Pacific NW stuff, especially if you're into punk.

Sloth. My understanding is that local bands can sell via consignment there.

I would disagree Calgary does not have a huge music scene. Maybe not well known outside Calgary but there are tons of bands here, and just when I think I know them all I'll see 3-4 bands on a weekend that I never heard of before.

Local bands - Sloth and Hot Wax
Most local bands sell CDs/Vinyl/Cassettes at live gigs - ex. Palomino, Nite Owl, Sled Island

CJSW has a large library of local music.

This is an awesome blog about Calgary music (past and present):

http://www.calgarycassettes.org/

The Calgary Cassette Preservation Society is dedicated to the digitization of analog recording artifacts by punk, new wave, rock, pop, etc bands of the Calgary region. The Calgary Cassette Preservation Society does not own the rights to any of the recordings we list or link to. These are being offered as a service to those who have lost cassette tapes in moves, weren't wise enough to pick up copies at the time or just like using up bandwidth. Or even just like looking at the j-cards. Whatever you're doing here, thanks for visiting.

I was a big fan of his radio show on CJSW, so I've been enjoying his podcast. It's nice to hear his take on the local scene.

Keven Woron is also a good host. I'm not a big metal fan, but I'll listen to his show once in a while because he's entertaining.

I think his recent show was a temporary 6 week gig. I loved how he started every show with XTC. I would do the same.
