QUEBEC CITY—Some of junior hockey’s biggest names are at the Memorial Cup, destined to go on to brighter and wealthier futures in the NHL.
But there are players here, too, like Oshawa Generals defenceman Dakota Mermis and Quebec captain Kurt Etchegary, both seeking the glory now because their futures are less certain.
Mermis is 21 and was overlooked in the NHL draft. He’s been to rookie camps, but he has no guarantee of a pro contract.

Don't get me wrong, but he sounds like a great prospect to sign to an ECHL deal in Adirondack. Really nothing to lose if all he wants is an ECHL deal.

But the fact that he is without a pro contract at this point likely means

a) Pro teams don't think he is as good as you think

or

b) He is holding out for a better contract
