Conroy: Flames are set to explore moving up in the draft/acquire another 1st
http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?...ce=twitterfeed
Quote:
Pending on who’s available, Flames assistant general manager Craig Conroy suggested Calgary could move up in order to nab a draft eligible a little more to their liking.
“Definitely we’ll make a pitch if there’s a guy we like,” Conroy said. “As a draft starts and you see someone falling or you feel comfortable saying ‘hey, we love this guy’ (and) whoever it is wants to move back and grab another pick, you might be able to move a little bit.
“I don’t know if you can jump too high. If you do, it’s going to be a bigger trade. You’re going to have to move a roster player and someone they really like. We’re open to everything.
“If there’s that player that you feel you’ve got to have him, that’s one thing about (Flames GM) Brad (Treliving). He was working every angle last year trying to get another pick in the first round and it didn’t happen, but he tried. That’s all you can do. I think he’s going to explore every option. He’s probably already started working the phones to find out which GM would be willing to trade the pick, maybe not right now but maybe at the draft something else comes up.”
|
Quote:
“I think it’s going to be deep,” he said. “Obviously the two guys at the top are elite. For me, they’re head-and-shoulders above everybody. There’s another group, three-to-seven, three-to-six, where you think these guys are going to be in there. Eight, nine, then there’s a bigger group we’re in down to 15.”
|
Quote:
“I think we have a pretty good feel,” Conroy said. “Probably the first nine of the draft will be gone. From that point on you don’t know. We want to make sure we’ve got the list in the right order. You always think maybe there’s a defenceman, maybe there’s a forward. There will be lots of decisions.
“It’ll be exciting when we get to that 10th pick and we go from there. Some guys just fall. Some guys maybe we like, maybe he’s 10th on our list, maybe he’s sitting there at 15.
“It could very easily happen.”

Not really news, this is how every team in the league operates at the draft.

Wonder if they revisit the Mike Richards trade to try and grab 13th for taking on their cap problem

Yeah it's a solid background video that many would probably have missed otherwise so I don't mind it being posted at all. Just trying to make some sort of a lame joke.
I'd make a good one if I knew how.

He will be going no where....way to thin on the backend as it is.

Teams I'd target to be willing to trade down for a second round pick are the ones who have already traded away their second.
Teams ahead of us in the draft who have done this are:
Toronto at 4 but they have another first rounder so I don't see this happening ever.
Philadelphia at 7 but they've already picked up Chicago's second (58th).
Florida at 11 traded their second for Jagr. This has possibilities for a deal but we only move up 4 spots.
The Stars at 12 but they acquired the Detroit 2nd (conditional). Give it a maybe.
LA at 13 but probably not worth it. Oh yeah, LA has the Leafs 2nd for Bernier.
Boston at 14 but trading up one spot isn't worth a second.

Backlund either. Can't see management being in a hurry to move on from Stajan either
These guys may have their faults, but Wideman is an NHL defenseman. Backlund and Stajan are NHL centres. Legit ones, the lot of them.
We can never have too many of either, and they are increasingly expensive to acquire on the open market. We trade Wideman and Stajan when we have in house replacements that are better. Not before.

Like Conroy says in the video, 4 spots is max unless it's a bigger deal involving a roster player.
Late second to move up 4? Guess it's a matter of who's available and the slide down to our pick possibility. Can't see us giving up a second to move up 2-3 spots, maybe a third gets it done depending on the player LA or Dallas wants, but then again someone behind us could offer more. Less than 4 weeks now to go, can't wait!

Wonder if they could package Hiller with a pick to move up rather than just quantity vs quantity for picks.

Florida is definitely an interesting target cause they will be in the position to pick up one of the guys that drops out of the top ten. I would definitely be willing to trade one of the 2nd round picks if there is a guy that has slipped to 11th that was expected to go at 7th/8th for example.

I hope if they do anything that they move up a tier in the first round.
I know everyone is preaching depth in this year's draft, but there are still only a few elite prospects. If it only costs one or two of our 2nd rounders move into the top 10, I think they should do it.

They're not trading Hiller - he has one year left, and his numbers are identical to Ramo's while playing 20 more games. No reason to extend Kari - next year will be about acclimating Ortio to full time NHL work. Better to do that with a vet on a 1 year deal instead of a 28 year old guy that just signed a longer term extension.

Hiller is quite a bit older than Ramo.
Seems like if you can get something for Hiller, it would make more sense to trade him for an asset and re-sign Ramo without giving up anything.

I could see this happening:
Cam Ward and 35th overall for Hiller and 45th overall
Hurricanes save over 2 million, get a guy who can be their starter. Treliving adds Ward who he apparently likes and moves up to get a really good prospect at 35. Ward and Ortio in net next season

If we can trade Hiller for anything of value 2 - 4th round pick you do it. As long as you can sign Ramo that is. Difference between the two goalies? Lots of differences but they are the same player. 1b goalies. One is signed and older, one is not signed and younger.
With that said I don't expect Hiller to be traded. I think Ramo signs in Edmonton! Then stands on his head against us, but only us lol!

I think Philly has another first rounder from TB (Rangers 1st) in the Coburn trade
