Micheal Ferland - Sobriety
Quote:
"I said, 'You have a problem. ... The biggest challenge for you is to tell me, yes I have a problem,'" the coach said. "I don’t want to save your career, I want to save your life, because if you don’t have a life, you’re not going to have a career.'"
Ferland broke down. Yes, he did need help. He had a drinking problem and did not know how to stop it.
"There were times I knew I had a problem, but I didn’t know what to say to anyone," Ferland told ESPN.com. "I didn’t know what people would think. I kept having meetings with Bob, and he’d always [say], 'If there’s anything we can do to help you, if you think you have a problem with any off-ice issues, just let us know.' And I’m thinking in my head, 'No, I can’t tell these guys.' But once I finally told him I needed help, I broke down in his office. Ever since that day it’s been uphill ever since."
For Micheal Ferland, this moment changed everything.

Pretty good read about Ferland and his struggles. He's definitely a feel-good story.

Congrats to Michael Ferland. Very very impressive young man.
And I can see why players are willing to battle for Hartley, he's willing to battle for them.

I love Ferly, I hope he plays every game for the Flames next season. He could become a dominant top-6 power forward in the NHL.
I loved these quotes by David Jones today regarding Ferly:
Quote:
"Sky's the limit for him. It's incredible the way he came into the playoffs," said Jones.
Jones laughed as he reflected back on a conversation Ferland had with him prior to game 1 against the Canucks.
"He told me before the playoffs started, he's like 'I'm going to be running around there and hitting everything that moves'. I'm like alright buddy, I'm excited to watch it."
It was quite a show and Jones says you can see why he instantly became a fan favourite.
"You just listen to them announce him before the game, they love him here and he's got a bright future if he keeps playing that way."

Forget the X's and O's, THIS is why Hartley is so good at his job. When you show that level of empathy, compassion and caring for your guys it breeds fierce loyalty. Ferland, and all the guys around him who saw and understood what Hartley did, would run through a wall for him. Heck, reading that, I'd run through a wall for him.

I've always said in order to win on the ice, you have to have the right people off the ice.
If you have bad management off the ice, it doesn't matter how good your players are.
This is exactly what I'm talking about.
My respect for Hartley has gone through the roof. Hopefully he'll be bumming around the Saddledome the first week of June. I'd love to shake his hand, not for this miracle season, but because after reading that article I believe I've gained insight on how to be a better manager.

Great story, good on Bob for stepping up and having the 'uncomfortable conversation', and good for Ferland to recognize the problem and accept the help.
And I really wonder how good he can be. I think he could become a core piece if he keeps developing and stays healthy.

I'd like to see Ferland-Bennett-Hudler. Jiri did such an amazing job mentoring Monahan and Gaudreau, I'd like to see what he could do with Bennett and Ferland for a whole season. Gaudreau is at the point where he can carry a line by himself, so I don't think it matters much who you put with him and Monahan

That article is awesome. I like Ferland even more. What an incredibly touching moment for Hartley to get through. I bet Hartley was as relieved as Ferland

I really really hope he stays clean and this story stays a positive one. Ferland is such a good kid, wish him all the best.
Good on Hartley for going beyond his job duties, literally saved his life. Without Hartley lord only knows where Ferland would be right now. When Stajan planted a big kiss on his cheek, never has such a thing hit me right in the feels like that.

Shows what a special coach the Flames have in Bob Hartley. Terrific human being. Its a privilege when you have a boss who truly gives a crap.

Loved the story...didn't know Jason Davidson was his agent...grew up a few years ahead of him in the same very small town in Sask.

Wasn't much of a Hartley supporter before but I have to admit I was totally wrong about him. Heart of gold as long as they try.
