I am 22, and have never had a ticket in my life.
I am under my parents insurance right now on there cars, but I am looking at purchasing my own car.
I am looking at a 2001 Honda Civic, and the quote I got was about $1800.00.
This new car would go under my parents and I would be a secondary driver.
Anyone else in a similar situation? If so what do you pay?

I just turned 23
I drive a '90 Civic hatchback ... I had a ticket when I was 18 and an accident when I was 20 no one was injured but there were damages insurance had to cover the accident was my fault
last year before the insurance breaks they were asking $5800 for my insurance needless to say my car stayed parked that year.. I still ended up paying about $1200 as a secondary driver on my parents cars
Now i'm paying about $1800 a year.. but my car is not insured just the people in it and anyone i get in an accident with ( is that called 3rd party? i can't remember)
I would say $1800 is about right considering you are a male (i'm assuming) in your 20's .. once you hit 25 the insurance will drop
I would make sure they you are able to register a 3rd car under your parents name I was under the impression that each person is only allowed to have one car registered as their primary vechicle ( for example if you have 3 cars and 3 people insured all 3 have to be primary drivers but a 4 driver can be secondary on all the cars) .. but i'm not 100% on that

$1800 is about right.
It sounds like you have more than one cars insured already (is the big ugly Buick still insured?) The insurance company might call you the primary driver because of 3 cars...

Yeah, turns out that 25 year old drop is very, very true. I was paying 1200 last year, this year (after turning 25 a couple months ago) I'm down to 500 a year. I think I just got lucky w/ a combination of age and the new provincial legislation, but still, 45 a month is a dream compared to when I was 18.
I don't think I could afford to drive if insurance was 2000... though I used to pay it, it seems unthinkable now!
Also, if you're a U of C grad, I think Meloche/Monnex gives a 'group' rate to all alumni, so if you're a U grad, or will be soon, give them a shot. They have a handy online quote system.

I had a 91 Explorer as a 24 year old, my rate was $1100 through Meloche. When I turned 25, my rate went down to $800. Last year, because of thje rate freeze and rollback, my rate went down $64 per year.
A few months ago, I bought a 97 Jimmy and slapped full coverage on it, and my rate is now $1100 per year.
Meloche Monnex is where its at, man. They give the best rates in the province. I've recommended them to at least 7 people (who were whining about insurance rates) and each and every one of them came back and told me that they saved ridiculous coin.

Very similar situation. 19, never had a ticket or accident, under my parent's plan, and I pay $300 every 6 months, or $600 per year. I live in the U.S. and my insurance company is Prudential. Not sure if that's available in Canada, but I figured I'd throw the name out there just in case you want to try and look up a quote.
EDIT: Also, yes, of course everyone knows that 25 is the age you step outside of the so-called "high-risk" pool. Rates might drop off a cliff at that point, but don't expect to get a dip before then.

Hopefully this is in the right thread this time.
For my wife and I and two cars it costs about 1,000 bucks I think.
I have a ton of tickets though and am married and over 25 so there are plenty of mitigating factors that would not apply to you.
I am just glad that I am finally over that 25 year old hump. Five years ago my rates were through the roof with all my tickets and age. Ouch I don't lilke remembering about paying those rates.

No tickets on record anymore... 23 years old. Had one at fault collision when 18. Was paying $3000 for just PLPD before insurance regulations, am now paying $1500 for PLPD on a '93 Chevy S10.

A crotchety old fart paying $1,200 per year for a 1997 Durango . . . . and I get the occasional speeding ticket.
I've also had four lower speed accidents, all the fault of the other party, costing me only my deductible. None in the last six years.

27 years old. I'm paying $2256 for a '99 red Dodge Stratus. I have it to the max with collision and just about everything else you can think to put on it. I have a couple traffic tickets and have been in a "chain reaction" accident.

I'm 23 now and drive a 94 Cavalier before the insurance reforms last year I paid 174/month and years previous to that I was up to 337/ month with no tickets and just PL/PD and comprehensive.
I now pay 122/month PL/PD + comprehensive and I have 1 ticket that is 3 demerits.

I'm 29, married my last liable accident is 7 years ago. My last speeding ticket is 6 years ago. My wife has a perfect driving record.
To insure our two vehicles costs $180 per month with the company my home owner policy is through.
Both vehichles have full insurance with $500 collision. Each of us is principal operator of our own vehichle and secondary on the other. I wasn't able to convince my agent to switch us around to try and get it down.
me 2002 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
wife 2001 Chev Cavalier
Biggest myth out there is that public insurance would be cheaper. In B.C. we would be paying $220-240 a month. In Saskatchewan it would be cheaper, but we wouldn't be insured for sweet fata all either.

You can't be serious, that's like 1.5 times what I pay as a monthly truck payment on a brand new Tacoma.
Brutal if it is true.

You do realize you're paying $650/month to drive a neon, right?
Might be a good idea to downgrade the car for something that's a bit easier on the wallet.
This thread is not making me want to move back to calgary right at the moment
