Default Jim Hughson: Canucks Homer?

This isn't really news, and it's an old article from the Globe but I thought some of you here might appreciate it:

Quote:
"Take that, Ben Eager," CBC play-by-play announcer Jim Hughson exclaimed as the San Jose forward's penalties sabotaged the Sharks in Game 2 of the NHL Western Conference final against Vancouver. Hughson was assuming the voice of Canucks retribution on the feisty Eager, a nice stylistic flourish. But it's led some outside Vancouver's orbit to question whether Hughson has been a little too in-sync with the feelings of the Canucks and their fans. ...

Wasn't until I saw his pregame that I startrd to honestly question his bias.

Yeah, as you said, it's not really news to people who have had to endure it. He doesn't even try to hide it. He calls the games like they are all dedicated Vancouver broadcasts. He shouldn't be calling national broadcasts.

I had to laugh last night when Hughson was defending Burrows by saying that he had every right to keep whacking at the puck in the crease because the puck was still loose, then Simpson had to clarify for him that it was Sedin's after-the-whistle whack that had the Flames pissed off.

It's funny how an ex-Oiler has to be the advocate for the Flames just to try and bring some professionalism to the broadcast.

It's the giddy-ness in his tone when things are going Vancouver's way, as well as saying their players' names like they're friends / relatives.

If I had to guess I'd say it was brought up prior to game 3 after the ridiculous focus on Lack's father through the first two games.

The most telling moment thus far was the winning goal in game one.

"Russell scores!" followed by ten awkward seconds of stunned silence.

Jim Hughson is no good when doing a game where the Vancouver Canucks are involved, and flat out shouldn't be calling games when they play.

His volume actually does go up if the canucks have a chance to win the game. They really should have given this series to Cole.

Why can't we just have the option to shut off commentary? I'm not listening on the radio. I can see what is happening. I get the same thing at the game. There's no commentator in my ears while I am watching.

I would have liked to have seen Rick Ball get it. I think he could call a reasonably unbiased game.

Or else the option to listen to a sync'd radio broadcast of either team

I remember a few seasons ago when the commentators were on strike with other broadcasters. It was awesome. You could actually hear the players and other sounds of the game much better.

I watched the Punjabi broadcast for game 2. Couldn't understand a word but much better than listening to Homer Hughson.

So excited to be in Vegas for the next 2 games and get the NBC broadcast... Hughson drives me up the wall with his canuck-centric calling. There is no good the flames can do, only things the canucks have done wrong on the play.

Not sure if anyone pointed it out in the "canucks butthurt" thread, but there is a thread on Canucks forum complaining about the CBC play by play with this series and that Hughson is too biased in Calgarys favor- specifically always singing praises of our young players. Either they are blind or Hughson really isn't "as much" a Canucks homer as we think and this is just another case of everyone thinking the play by play guy is out to get their team.

I personally think that although Hughson might be slightly biased in the Canucks favor, it maybe isn't as bad as commonly thought.

Why doesn't he just call Vancouver games and be a regional broadcaster.

Had something like that when you changed to the SAP programming of some US stations, the SAP was occasionally an arena feed sound but they used it for spanish and other language programming, but didnt always enable it. Depended on the teams as I recall. Worked well.

Anyway, write here!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.
