Default My 3rd Pilgrimage to Calgary Saturday

Kind of because Nieuwendyk but mostly because when I was 5 years old I had a hockey card of Joel Otto and thought the uniform looked cool...since around then I have been a Calgary Flames fan.

The first Flames game I ever saw on television was Game 7 in 1994 against Vancouver. In those days, I would check the newspaper two days after games so I could see the result. (Where I lived, games would start too late for scores to come in time for next day printing.)

Through the 90's, I only got to see one Flames game a season - when they'd play the New York Rangers.

In 1996, nhl.com added online radio so I was able to listen to Peter Maher. Somewhere around that time I searched Calgary Flames on the Internet and found Fire On Ice forum.

In 1999, my family got directTV so I could watch Flames game on a regular basis for the first time. After that season, I bought season tickets.

In 2004, you all know what happened with the Flames. Game 6 of the first round was my first ever trip to Calgary. I thought it was my destiny to be present for the first playoff series win in 15 years. Didn't quite work out that way. But fortunately, I was able to return to Calgary for my second trip just a few weeks later for the entire Stanley Cup Finals.

11 years later, I will return to Calgary for the third time this Saturday for Game 6 of their series against Vancouver.

Leaving Philadelphia (where I live now) at 6 am Saturday morning. Departing Calgary 6 am Sunday morning.

My hopes for my first trip from 11 years ago become reality Saturday night.

Amazing story!! I've always wondered how fans of various sports teams who aren't from the city are able to stay so loyal or even develop a fondness for the team in the first place... but this is cool, the city is rockin' right now, you're gonna love it!

It's amazing, isn't it? 18 years or so this thing Bingo started has been going on in one form or another. You were a kid when it started, but ALWAYS a solid contributor both on and off the forum!

Congrats Ari. My guess is you will get to see that series close out that you missed in 2004!

Fond memories of you, me, josef and KevanGuy chirping with the guy in the Bertuzzi jersey at the Rose & Crown 04.

Will they let you on the plane when you're still drunk?

Welcome back.

Have lived in New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania with no actual roots in Calgary. So long distance and lack of logistical sense.

That is really cool. I use to love going through boxscores in the sports section of the newspaper. Thankfully, the Calgary Herald printed the score the very next day!

All the best

The first version of Fire on Ice was 1997. I'm almost 100% sure of that. Bingo can confirm.

You were in very early too. Maybe even that year?

Welcome back Ari ... I'm in section 220 with my daughter if you're close enough to say hi, but don't sweat it and waste time tracking down a guy on dad duty!

Takes me back, that was such a crazy magical ride in 2004 with so many side stories ...

Calgarypuck is more slick and bigger now, more traffic, but we have lost a bit of that community in the process.

Cool, hope it's a great trip for you, and you're flying home excited about the 2nd round matchup with Anaheim.

It's always fun to hear stories of those who are from outside the region. The dedication that it requires to follow the Flames for anyone East of Calgary really is something. I think it sucks waiting for 8:00 games, couldn't imagine watching at 10:00 most nights, let alone those who watch between midnight and 7 AM.
