I am looking at buying a Jeep and was wondering what type of things to look for? I am graduating in a few days and wanted to give myself a nice present (I saved up through internships and I am fortunate to have a job lined up). I want a vehicle that I can drive around the city but I want enough space for road trips etc.
I really like the Jeep Compass and probably want to buy a brand new car. Any advice for a first time buyer? Any well known salesman on CP who can give me a hand? I also do have a budget and want something at a reasonable price.
I bought my jeep off of Pylon who was great, but he's left the car side of things I believe.
I went straight with a Wrangler, and I love the damn thing, it sounds weird but a jeep was the car that I always wanted.
If I have any regrets about it, I would have bought the 4 door version instead of the 2 door version, as there's not a lot of cargo space in the two door.
I've also never used the canvas top, I just use the hard top because its quiet and flip off the panels when I want to get some bald head exposure.
Not sure about the Compass, I had a friend that bought a 2009 patriot, and its falling apart.
With mine except for some minor body issues has been very good for the 6 years that I've driven it. When I get my next vehicle it will probably be a wrangler again.

I also have a 2004 Wrangler but soft top. I agree with Captain, the 4 door version would be nice as it's a little cramped for space when we have our camping gear and dog in the back. I have had 0 mechanical issues so far, only thing i have had done is clutch replacement. Not the greatest on gas though

It depends on what you want to do with it, I have a 2010 Patriot that I also got from Pylon, its a small 4 cylinder but for an in town runabout it works great, its cheap and it came with the upgraded Entertainment system.
I like it. Its my 3rd Jeep, previously I had a Cherokee and Grand Cherokee so going to the smaller one was a bit of an adjustment but its been working great so far.

*Disclaimer, I'm a certified Jeep Guy according to my buddies
I've found with Wranglers that you either love them or are indifferent. Go for a test drive in one and see if you like them.
When I graduated from university i got a 2012 Wranlger Sport (2 Door). It was the base model, as cheap as I could get, no frills. For what I wanted, I loved it. Totally reliable, fun to drive, capable in snowy or poor conditions, top down in summer (which everyone loves) 4x4, etc. Some of the bad, however, was because I didn't spend extra on better tires, they were to run of the mill all seasons.... which are ok for traction in 4x4, but obviously do nothing for stopping on bad roads.... I found I would have liked to have a few more extras as well. Additionally, I ended up getting my soft top slashed like 3 times (granted, it was within a really short time period, so it was obviously someone ####ing with me... such is the luck of inner city living) which sucked, but aside from that I really didn't mind soft top only.
I ended up changing up to a 2014 4 door Unlimited in October, and I can agree, once you go up to the 4 door, there really isn't going back, as well, the added benefits that come with an upgraded trim class is very, very nice. All in all, I have to say I really like this model. Keep in mind like some of the guys said before, the Wranglers upgrade the engine to a 3.6 L V6 which in my 2 door, got ~11 L/100 KM and ~13 L/100KM in my 4 door. This isn't incredible by any means but for me is outweighed by a better (imo) engine.
I guess my advice is spending a small amount on THE RIGHT upgrades is worth it. New rims, upgraded audio, leather is a waste if you're looking for a price point vehicle. Go for things like an upgraded tire, hard top, 4x4 or AWD and some space if those are your needs. It's worth the couple extra bucks in the long run in my opinion.

I just saw these worst vehicle reports a couple days ago and the Compass is on both (twice on one). Jeep is also listed as the number one worst car maker. I'm not a car guy, but they seem to suck all around. Especially the new ones.
Jeeps tend to have some of the worst reliability ratings out of any brand (usually down there with Land Rover). And not just small things...you hear more than your fair share of issues with big-ticket items (brother in law just bought a new Cherokee...new 9-speed automatic had to be entirely replaced after 1 month). My in-laws have a Jeep Liberty, and it's probably the biggest piece of junk Ive driven in a long time. It has Fischer Price quality plastic on the inside, and drives terribly. One of these few vehicles that feels downright dangerous to me. I'm sure the Compass drives better than a Liberty, since its more of a CUV, but the Compass doesn't seem to be that much newer of a platform.
I can see the appeal of the Wragler, and perhaps the Grand Cherokee, but otherwise the lineup is something I'd personally stay away from, especially something old like a Compass. There are just better options out there. Try a Mazda CX-5. Or at least the new Cherokee if you want to remain with Jeep.

There are Jeeps, and then there are Wranglers/TJ's/YJ's.
The soccer mom style Jeep product, yeah, it tends to be a little on the sketchy side for reliability. But as far as Wranglers and TJ's go. They are absolutely bomb proof. Partially due top their simplicity. And resale on them is over the top good.
I have an old liberty as my winter beater, but the next one will likely be a 2 door Wrangler sport with a hard top, and off road gearing. I just love the versatility, and absolute no holds barred off-road capabilities of them. And the accessory catalogue is deeper than anything out there.

Thanks for the input everyone, I really appreciate it. Jeeps seem to be a hit or miss on here haha
I am mostly looking to buy a vehicle that I can drive inner-city, have enough space for a lot of sporting equipment, and a sporty look. My budget is around the 30k mark and I don't want to go with anything crazy expensive because this will be my first car leaving university. I also wouldn't mind something that is good on gas.
Isn't it rumoured that the Jeep Patriot and the Compass are at or near the end of production. They stopped making the Liberty in 012. Maybe look at the new compact Renegade or the Cherokee.

Booting around the city would be okay, but road tripping in any Jeep product (Grand Cherokee excepted) would be hell. Since you said you want this vehicle for road tripping I'd look at the vehicles Table5 and kunkstyle suggested. If you're dead serious about road tripping, nothing beats a car.

I'm on Jeep #4 now, from an old CJ to a '13 4 door Wrangler. Different vehicle from anything else with the Jeep name on it, but all of mine have been reliable, apart from the CJ that I built myself. Keep them simple and they're great. Definitely have to drive one a bit to be sure, though, solid axles & body on frame is a bit different ride, but if you're cool with a heavy duty truck feel they're awesome.
Two cons - fuel economy won't be great and it's really easy to get addicted to new parts

We went from a compass to a patriot and the upgrade is worth it. Still fantastic on gas but more room for our camping equipment. It's still not big enough to haul a trailer though. Our next will probably be the Cherokee.

Just buy a truck and solve all the issues. You can carry whatever you need, they're cheaper than an SUV and better on gas as well (depending on exactly what you get). Just all around they're the way to go IMO.

Enter the old man rant:
I hate new trucks these days, they're ridiculously huge and a bitch to park downtown. Why do you need to be 8 feet up and 20 feet long?
And all the rounded corners?
When did this:
Become sexier than this:
I mean, why does a regular half-ton have to be enormous?
I like the old trucks much better.
End old man rant. I swear I'm not that old.
