I've already psyched myself out about this next week, but I have to get a root canal, as well as getting my wisdom teeth finaly pulled soon too. They perscribed me some drugs to get through both, but I'm not looking forward to it. So I'm looking for good positive stories, if possible, about dentist visits or root canals, or anything of the lot.

I haven't ever had a root canal, but I had my wisdom teeth pulled, almost a year ago today. I was conscious for it. Didn't feel any pain during it. Afterwards, I wasn't woozy or weak on my feet at all. I went and got the pain killers they prescribed me, took a couple that night and was out like a light. There was some swelling on the second day but it was all but gone a day or two later. It's nothing to be scared of, you will be fine.

After a bad soccer injury, I need a root canal on my front, top tooth. I was worried. It wasn't a bad experience. It just seemed to take too long. I think the worst thing is the sound and the smell. I felt no pain, and although I had painkillers perscribed to me, I didn't need them.
I'll leave my story about wisdom teeth out.

I've only got bad stories about Root canals. But My wisdom teeth on the other hand turned out great!
I had all 4 removed, went under anastetic, didn't even know what happened when I woke up. And basically no pain whatsoever afterwords.

I just had my wisdom teeth taken out 11 days ago. I was put under so obviously the process was painless. The aftermath was also pretty much painless. Just some soreness on the first day and that's it. Zero swelling. Zero pain. Just very annoying not to be able to eat anything that tastes good for a few days after the surgery.
As for the root canal, I've never had one, though I should have. I got an elbow in the teeth playing basketball a few years back and the tooth started dying. I didn't go to the dentist for almost two years (I wasn't avoiding the dentist, I went months after the injury but the darkening wasn't noticeable then) and then went a couple months ago and the dentist said I was very lucky because the tooth had undergone the process of a root canal by itself. So I get to avoid the root canal and the only problem is I have one incisor which is slightly darkened, but only noticeable if you look really closely. I can deal with that.

Another thing, when it comes to wisdom teeth it all depends on your age. If you are over 25 (give or take) than you can have real problems.
My dad got his out when he was 45 and was in the hospital on morphine for days after the surgery in absolutely excrutiating pain.
It has to do with the fact that after a certain amount of time the roots grow down and adhere to the jaw, or something like that. Once that happens you're pretty much screwed.

Had my wisdom teeth pulled out a couple years ago.. the surgeon that was going to do it couldn't find an anesthesiologist to come in the time I needed to get it done so I ended up having to have my dentist do it
I was awake for it, it took about 13 needles to freeze my face but after that it only took about 20 minutes to pull the teeth and get me sewn up and I walked out .. the crunching sound when they pulled it out was a little bit gross but other than that it was not a bad experience
Almost no swelling or bruising, very little bleedng and no infection. I only took pain killers the first night.. I didn't need it after that .. Just make sure you keep it clean in there and you will be fine
My brother went for root canal yesterday... nevermind

Yeah no kidding. That sound really was the worst part of it. I had 12 needles myself, but honestly, the sounds were just gross......
But there was no pain, Prottotype, so i focus on that part of the story.

It's really nothing... doens't hurt at all. What hurts are the damn dental bills. It just takes a long time. I had to get one due to an abcessed tooth, I don't wish that on anyone when you get one you wish you could pull your tooth out with pliers and that it would actually feel good doing so.
The root canal was nothing, don't worry. Hopefully your dentist has TV's in the roof or you'll be bored out of your mind.

hey joel, trevor here.
my story isnt positive, but it isnt negative either.
i had local for my root canal, but they werent able to get it all the way through.
the feeling i felt was not pain, nor discomfort, but rather a strange feeling that i had never felt before, in an area that i have never felt anything before. it made me aware of the work being done obviously, but there was no pain associated with it. it was just wierd feeling that is all.

If your tooth is hurting you now, you'll be very happy to endure an hour of uncomfortableness with the root canal. I've got very sensitive teeth but every time I've had a root canal it's been relatively pain free and I always felt much better after it was over.
As for the wisdom teeth, I put that off for nearly 10 years because I had heard horror stories and had psyched myself out. I didn't even have to take a tylenol afterward.
I think alot with both procedures depends on how good the dentist is too. Of course, if your wisdom teeth are underneath the roots of your molars it's probaly going to suck pretty bad.

Wow, my root canal only took about half an hour, no pain or anything. Then I went back and had the first two wisdom teeth pulled, and that's yucky, but didn't hurt. AS a side note, you can't smoke with a frozen face cause your lips won't hold the cigarette tight enough for suction.... I suppose that's why they tell you not to do it.

Wow... thanks everyone...
One of the things I'm scared of is the prescription that they gave me... I don't like needles, but they said I'd be stoned through it all. That's not quite my cup of tea.
I'm glad that there's actually good stories out there.
As fot the wisdom teeth, I'm 25. I'm scared about that, cause my buddy was bruised for about 3 days.
I don't know. I'm a big wuss, but it sounds all good. Thanks everyone. It'll be a manditory read before going to the dentist that day.

I've never had a root canal myself, so I can't comment. I believe both of my parents have, and they said they were rather unpleasant experiences, but they are both in their mid 40s so maybe it's just because they're older, I dunno.
As for wisdom teeth, I haven't had mine out, they started to come in a few months ago so I probably should get them out soon, although I don't want to. My brother however has braces on that will be coming off in the next 6-9 months, and in order to get the braces on, he needed to get his wisdom teeth out. He had all 4 removed. He got an IV in his arm to put him out during the surgery. He doesn't like needles so he wasn't too happy about that, but he says he obviously doesn't remember anything from 2 seconds after the IV was in, to the time he woke up again. Unfortunately when I got home that day he was sitting in front of the coffee table watching TV and sobbing. I asked him what was wrong but then I realized what he went through. He was in some pain, but had pills to help ease it. He is only 15 years old now, and I believe was 14 at the time of the surgery, so he is considerably younger than most everyone here, so hopefully you can deal with the pain better. Also he did swell up like a chipmunk for about 2-3 days, and my father and I took pictures. They are absolutely HILARIOUS.
Before I stop this ridiculously long post, I have to ask, how is everyone managing to get through root canal procedures with little or no pain? Moreover, how often does everyone brush? I was brought up as a kid to brush 3 times a day, morning noon and night, but I stopped that routine as a teen, eventually going from 3, to 2, and finally to 1. You might think it's gross or poor hygiene, but my teeth are pretty white and I'm proud of that. I also haven't visited the dentist in a long time. My mother tries to schedule appointments for me, but I always cancel or tell her not to. I brush every day in the morning, and I'm not one of those ######s who brushes and then goes and eats. I have breakfast and THEN brush my teeth. Of course, if for some reason I have eaten something weird or nasty and I have stank breath, then yes, I'll make an exception and brush them. I also drink lots of water which, with all the fluoride in it, has given me rather hard teeth over the years which has kept me from having cavaties, and thus, I feel I can avoid further dentist appointments.

I had my wisdom teeth out and was awake for hte whole thing and it was no big deal. I hate the dentist, actually do sedation dentistry now, and if I could make it through I am sure you will have no problems at all.

No worries, it's not as bad as it sounds. The freezing hurts a bit but that is only for a few seconds.

Don't know about root canals, but my dad has had a few and he says he doesn't see what the big deal is. Hurts a bit but not the terrible stuff some people describe.
I had my wisdom teeth out in May. The first few days were rough, but not that bad. You just don't eat much, drink slurpee (not with a straw) and watch baseball on TV. After about 2 or 3 days, I didn't need to take painkillers, and everything healed up just fine. No problems.

I had 6-wisdom teeth, let 4 grow in mostly, the pull was pretty easy, did it awake, its neat the grinding and pushing... I recovered the same day, I think i was eating normal and stuff teh same day, jsut with the front of my mouth, they really only pulled 1 & 2 because the 5 & 6 needed room to come in, and thought hey let's grab 3 & 4 while we're in there..
I had a root canal after teeth got knocked out with a hockey stick. The root canal was probably the most pleasent bit, what I don't get is how it can hurt, they freeze you then remove the root (nerve) so what's left to hurt? Once it's gone it's gone no?
