Default Would Airdrie be able to support a WHL team?

The new census has Airdrie at over 58000 people and the would have to be a bigger arena built but would it work there?

Yah when you look at some of the other populations around the league sure they possibly could, but I can't see them being anywhere on the WHL's radar. I think moving one of the Mustangs or Royals to Airdrie would be a pretty good idea however.

Agreed. The population isn't the problem, but location. Airdrie is too close to Calgary and I doubt the WHL wants to put two teams right on top of each other like that. The risk of cannibalizing the market is too great.

That said, if a rink of sufficient quality were to be built, the city could support the AJHL without issue.

Yes, but it will be a logistical nightmare once Calgary builds a Berlin-style wall between us and Airdrie.

I think if they could build a 7500 seat arena in Airdrie the city would support a WHL team big time. It would be a better fan experience watching a junior game in 7500 seat arena than an half empty NHL arena. Move the Kootenay Ice to Airdrie once an arena is built.

I don't think it would work. There's already an established WHL franchise within a 3 minute drive.

I don't think Airdrie has the necessary independent identity to support a WHL team.

Actually it is the Canucks and Mustangs, I thought that the Canucks became the Mustangs, turns out it was the Royals who became the Mustangs. The two Calgary teams are the Canucks and Mustans, I think one of them would be better off playing out of Airdire.

The Ice are really struggling attendance wise despite being very competititve on the ice. Whenever relocation comes up they are at the top of the lis. Winnipeg had been their rumored destination for the past couple of seasons, or some combination of Lethbridge to Winnipeg and the Ice to Lethbridge. It sounds like Abbatsford is the current destination rumor as Winnipeg is out of the equation due to getting an AHL franchise.

I don't live in Airdrie and I don't know the mind set of their residents but I would think they would love to have a local sports team to get behind.

Airdrie would look good under a Dome. Can we arrange that?

Playoffs in lower level leagues are a harder sell, believe it or not. You lose group ticket sales, and you lose some season ticket holders who don't pick up the post-season. And in tiny markets like Cranbrook, this is the result.

Attendance in our series, btw:

G1 @Cgy 8256
G2 @Cgy 8560
G3 @Ktn 2126
G4 @Ktn 2147
G5 @Cgy 9121
G6 @Ktn 2645
G7 @Cgy 7191

Of note for Calgary - the first two playoff games are part of the season ticket package. Without that, our crowds probably would have been in the 6500-7000 range.
